Presentation transcript:

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University research consistently finds that: Frequent family mealtimes are an effective tool to help keep America’s kids substance free. National Family Day was founded in 2001 to remind parents and caregivers that Family Meals Make A Difference!

Why is Underage Drinking in South Florida a serious health concern? 1. Only a few years ago we learned that the brain does not fully developed until about years of age 2. The younger the drinking or taking illegal drugs occurs, the greater the risk for A LIFE LONG Addiction. 3. In Florida, nearly 1/3 of high school students report having their first drink of alcohol by age 13 or younger.

Why is South Florida 2014 Family Day important? It’s Simple….and it’s been PROVEN to keep kids drug free Kids who eat dinner with their families frequently: Are at lower risk for substance abuse Are less likely to have friends to use drugs Are likelier to get better grades in school Are more likely to not smoke, drink and use drugs

Alcohol can cause alterations in the structure and function of the developing brain, which continues to mature into a person’s mid 20s, and it may have consequences reaching far beyond adolescence.

Most young people ages 12 to 20 do not drink. Alcohol is a drug. Alcohol affects every organ in the body, including the brain. Alcohol affects an adolescent’s brain development. Alcohol use can interfere with their health, academic, and workplace performance and their relationships with friends and family.

Wondering how to get started? 1. Commit to sharing a family meal at least 3-4 times per week. 2. Learn to TEXT and stay connected to your children. 3. Open your home for your children and their friends to “hang out”. 4. Secure your alcohol supply at home. 5. Talk to them about theirs friends, interests and the dangers of alcohol & drugs. 6. Answer their questions and LISTEN to what they say. 7. Be firm and Clear that you have ZERO TOLERANCE for their alcohol and drug use.
