What it takes to qualify for: Olympic swimming History 4 th hour By: Reid Byers Learn & teach 2/20/13 4 th hour

Money payments Swimming is an expensive sport. It costs so much because there are many places and things your money has to go toward. These include meet and event fees, coaching fees, and equipments costs.

Meet/event fees For every race a swimmer competes in they have to pay a fee. Each race costs around $6 to $10. This adds up because a swimmer can swim up to 12 races a meet.

Coach fees Coaches are paid annually and at every meet. Then they go with that money and pay for the pool renovation and the meets that you are able to swim in. Most likely the head coach gets the majority of your monthly fee.

Equipment Equipment is a huge part of the sport of swimming. Coaches and yourself will and have to provide some equipment. Snorkels, caps, goggles, fins, pull buoy, and a kick board are all needed.

Time standards In order to swim in big meets like Age Group Champs, and the Olympic Trials you have to achieve certain time standards. 2

Type of swimming 3 There are three types of training a swimmer needs. The amount you do is up to the coach. These three types are power, speed, and aerobic. These sets range by the yards that they are swam.

Power sets These sets are less than or equal to 25 yards (one length) of straight sprinting. You will only do a few of these kind of sets because they aren’t very long sets.

Speed sets Speed sets are a little longer than 25 yards, but n more than 200 yards or 8 lengths. These are fast, but not sprints like power sets. These are also done longer and more often than power sets.

Aerobic sets Aerobic sets are long distance or endurance sets over 200 yards to any distance. These sets are used to give the swimmer the endurance to be able to maintain the same pace during a race. These are done the most out of every type of sets.

Interesting facts Over 50% of swimmers quit the sport because they miss out on social life. 50% of swimmers also suffer from shoulder injuries. An hour of swimming averagely burns 650 calories. Did you know?
