Resume Workshop Cal Poly Pomona - Barkada How to put together a resume and alter it for a cleaner and descriptive resume

Make a list Take out a piece of paper  Write down what jobs and volunteer work you've previously had before. Include when you were employed. Ex: Worked at Taco Bell (Jan March 2011) Ex: Volunteered at Pomona Valley Hospital (March Present)  Write down what skills you've acquired Ex: Cash register use Ex: Microsoft Office use

Make a list Write down your personal attributes  Ex: independent, punctual, etc. Write down where and when you went to school. Starting with high school.  Ex: Centennial High School, Bakersfield, CA  Ex: California State Polytechnic University – Pomona present Make sure you spell out the entire school name

Objective Objective is about...  what you want  what you can bring to the position  where you can use your skills to make the company better  Include the company's name! Example: Objective: To obtain a position where I can maximize my management skills, training experience and customer service to the Goliath National Banking environment.

Education Things to include:  Grade point average (ONLY if it is above 3.0)  Educational accomplishments Research, internships  Scholarships  Major Coursework completed towards degree  Competitions won

Previous Work/Volunteer/Internship Things to include:  Place of work Full name of company  Date employed – date terminated (Month employed, year – Month terminated, year) Start with most recent job position  Skills acquired from position to your degree  Responsibilities of position in each job/volunteer  Achievements gained

Personal Characteristics Always positive characteristics!! Use words that you already know the meaning to Include being able to work with others  Group settings  Projects Good characteristics to put:  Punctual, independent, personable, etc.

Things to Remember! You have 30 seconds to impress your employer! – You have to impress from the VERY beginning. Use an active voice – “Facilitated resume workshop” sounds more impressive than “Resume Workshop Facilitator” Include results when describing your positions “Increased club's account balance by 50%” Assume you will get searched for on the internet! – If your resume is inconsistent with your social networks, things will not bode well for you.
