Content Background to TVAP Project Aims Achievements to Date What will an apprenticeship placement offer? Applying for Funding Support Case Studies Project Legacy  2

Background to TVAP An industrial response needed following the closure of Corus Redcar and the general industrial economic downturn Realisation that a large number of engineering apprentices would not complete their apprenticeships The average age of the workforce at around 53 years old plus. Employers worked together and put forward a proposal as a strand within the Tees Valley Industrial Programme Secured £2.1 million of funding from ONE and NAS to support apprentices The funding was subsequently reduced to £1.8 million following a Government review in October

Project Aims TVAP Aims –To ensure as many engineering apprentices can continue and complete their frameworks and to sustain their prospects of employment within the Tees Valley –To engage the supply chain and sub-contractor base to take up more apprenticeships –To increase the number of companies taking an apprentice on for the first time. –To build the capacity and expertise legacy in managing apprenticeship placements 4

Achievements to Date. 5 Phil Bedford, Cleveland Potash Procurement Manager, said “We have seen the benefit of the Apprenticeship Programme within our own organisation for many Contract Deliverables Project Achievement to date Project Forecast by completion Priority 1150 Apprentices189 Apprentices (including 43 extenders) 250 Apprentices (including 43 extenders) Priority 260 Employers 15 New Companies 80 Employers 25 New Companies 100 Employers 30 New Companies

What will an Apprenticeship placement offer employers? Contribute to your business quickly through highly structured learning Bring a new perspective into the organisation Older and more experienced employees can pass on their expertise to new apprentices Likely to be motivated, loyal and potentially long serving as you are investing in them Apprentices become the skilled workforce of the future 6

Applying for Funding support Simple eligibility rules agreed by the joint funders, the engineering apprentice needs to –Reside in the Tees Valley or be hosted by a company based within the Tees Valley –Be working towards an Apprenticeship Level2 /Level 3, –Have been made redundant, be under threat of redundancy or can’t find an employer to host him –Work through an approved Training Provider (most of local Colleges and Training providers are onboard) More details can be found at 7

Case Studies Apprentices working in companies who focus on energy, recycling and non-traditional fields –VSMC, Biffa Polymers and Polyphotonix More SMEs involved further down the supply chain – Bayley Security, Stockton Castings, Jalna Construction Companies who had not previously hosted apprentices –Agelec, Dual Brown, ADJ Fabrication 8

Project Legacy The TVAP project will have assisted approximately 250 engineering apprentices to continue with and complete their apprenticeship across a wide range of disciplines. Increased awareness of the benefits of hosting apprenticeships within the Supply Chain including Subcontractors. Both of these groups have taken up significantly more apprentices. Raised the awareness of the benefits of apprenticeships and build the capacity and expertise in managing apprenticeship placements in the Tees Valley The National Skills Academy are bidding for additional funds to extend the project. 9

Thank you To the participating companies and apprentices and their positive attitudes, particularly of the individuals and companies who have supported TVAP via the steering group. To the training providers and particularly the enthusiasm of the individuals who have contributed significantly to ensure the project has been a success. 10
