RURAL REGENERATION RURAL REGENERATION according to Andrea Fugaro Responsible for Development Policies

WHO IS COLDIRETTI ? Coldiretti is the most important Italian agricultural organization. It was created in 1944 and represents 54% of all Italian farmers. SOME FIGURES: 1.4 million members 19 regional federations 90 subregional federations 724 local offices 5,668 sections

REGENERATING AGRICULTURE: THE PROJECT OF COLDIRETTI “To regenerate agriculture” means to discover once again and to underline the core function of agriculture in a new society, where the relationship between consumer and farmer becomes more and more important, above all concerning the food quality and the integration of the farms in the territory. The borders of our project move from the agricultural sector to the whole society MULTIFUNCTIONNALITY

REGENERATING RURAL TERRITORIES Stronger local economies Tourism, handicraft, … Infrastructures Good governance (PPP, bottom-up approach) at the economy’s service Better quality of life Basic Services Resources Management IS THAT ENOUGH TO REGENERATE RURAL TERRITORIES?

SYNERGIES Diversification means no regeneration if there are no SYNERGIES between: Different sectors (Agriculture, Handicraft, Industry, Tourism, Services, …) All the actors of rural territories (Public Administration, Economic and Social organizations, NGOs,…) All the policies operating on a specific territory (Rural development, Cohesion, CAP, Environmental policy, other EU, national and local initiatives)

THE WAY TO GO to REALISE a RURAL REGENERATION Strategic approach for ALL the policies operating in rural areas; Integrated implementation INSIDE the rural development policy (between different axes) and WITH the OTHER policies (cohesion, CAP…);

THE WAY TO GO to REALISE a RURAL REGENERATION To valorize the agricultural element in the rural territory; To avoid any risk of isolation from both the agricultural and the other stakeholders’ point of view; To exploit every kind of synergy.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION! Andrea Fugaro Responsible for Development Policies
