Podcasting – A Students Perspective Silvia Janska Nick Short Royal Veterinary College University of London

Outline Introduction How we did it How it worked Student perceptions Lessons learnt Conclusions

Background Royal Veterinary College (RVC) BSc Veterinary Science Lectures and handouts Blackboard Audio lectures…

How it was done

How it worked Academic participation Number of lectures recorded Lectures uploaded at end of topic File sizes and download times Quality of recording

How useful have you found the audio recordings of the Form & Function / Molecular Regulation lectures?

How many of the lectures did you listen to?

How did you listen to the lectures?

Other comments Most students used laptops not iPods Slow download speeds Transferring files 80% would not miss lectures!!!

Conclusions Good supplement but NOT replacement for traditional teaching Automatic download through iTunes Enable quicker file downloads Record all lectures Create other podcasts including summaries Use more students!

Discussion create a feature whereby we can subscribe to lectures as podcasts, ex. on iTunes. …I dont think I would do so well without it! Please definitely do if for next year - It helped me sooooooo much… If all the lecturers would agree to be recorded that would be great. I hope this continues next year. They complement handout notes very well. …useful tool for clarifying points that were originally missed… Record all lectures for future reference. …synchronize the talking and the powerpoint… Divide the audio file into chapters for easy access to certain parts… This is a massively good revision tool, especially for us kinesthetic learners…

Thank You Silvia Janská: Nick Short:
