Enriched English Research Based Feature Article

STRUCTURE Headline: catchy, significant Secondary Headline: MAKES THE TOPIC AND THE ANGLE MORE PRECISE*** Lead: HOOK the reader and establish the PURPOSE of your article. Often the most creative part of the essay

LEADS A vivid description: The sharks were circling the diver, getting closer and closer. Dozens of them, it seemed. And they looked hungry enough to attack. A strong or surprising statement: Would you jump into the ocean with ten sharks circling your boat? A powerful anecdote: When Dr. Roy was a young boy, he dreamed of seeing a real shark. Little did he know that after earning his PhD in marine biology he would become one of the world’s leading experts on shark behaviour, and one of the world’s most well-known defenders of sharks. A quotation: ‘ Before you make laws that legalize shark hunting, you should first learn to understand them,’ insisted Dr. Roy

BODY Here is where you load in the main information to develop your CONTROLLING IDEA and illuminate the topic. This section often included subhead to separate the sections of the article and help the reader follow more easily. CONTROLLING IDEA: This is not the writer’s opinion per se, but your understanding of the issue. (avoid all I think, I feel, I believe......)

CLOSE Second most important part (after the lead) Your goal is to drive home the controlling idea and make a long lasting impression. You can use a quotation that appeals to emotions. You can use a circular structure, using a metaphor or anecdote in the close may circle back to the one used in the lead Lead: Would you jump into an ocean with ten sharks circling? Close: Now that you understand how truly misunderstood sharks are, you may even consider jumping in to the ocean with ten of them circling nearby.
