Diversity – a Definition Diversity refers to the presence of differing cultures, languages, ethnicity, races, sexual orientations, religious sects, abilities, classes, ages and national origins of the people in an institution or community such as a school, workplace or neighborhood.

Diverse Populations

Trends in the Workforce There is an ever-increasing number of women, minorities, aging and persons of diverse lifestyles and ethnic backgrounds. In the 21 st century, nearly one of two workers will be members of today’s minority groups. Employers will gain a competitive advantage by capitalizing on diversity.

Encouraging Trends Many corporations are making a corporate commitment to valuing diversity Many top managers are assuming a leadership role in promoting diversity. Valuing diversity is being linked to managerial performance evaluations. Greater emphasis is being placed on inclusivity.

Discouraging Facts Earnings of African- American and Hispanic women are 65% and 55% respectively of white men’s average earnings. White women earn about 72 cents for every dollar earned by white men. The unemployment rate of African- American men is twice that of white men. Three of four working-age people with disabilities who want to work are not working. Half of the total Native American workforce population is unemployed.
