A New South In 1968, many white Southern Democrats were upset with their party’s involvement in the Civil Rights movement. A large shift occurred as many Southerners became Republicans.  Mississippi state flag

WHAT DO THE COUNTRIES IN BLACK HAVE IN COMMON?

OPEC OPEC = Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (had oil). During the 1960s, OPEC countries gradually increased prices. When U.S. supported Israel in 1973, the Arab oil producing countries quadrupled (x4) prices.

Troubled Economy From the U.S. faced stagflation Stagflation occurs when there is high unemployment and high inflation (prices up).

Causes of Stagflation 1.Pres. Johnson’s funding of both Vietnam and social programs through deficit spending. 2.Increased International competition. 3.America’s heavy dependency on foreign oil (still a problem today!).
