The American Colonies Emerge Settlement of the Middle Colonies

New Netherland Founded by explorer Henry Hudson and the Dutch in 1621 Made money through fur trading New Amsterdam becomes the capital city

New Netherland Opened the colony to settlers from all over Europe In general, the Dutch had much friendlier relations with Native Americans than the English King Charles II of England grants his brother, the duke of York, permission to drive out the Dutch The Dutch surrender without a shot being fired- British colony renamed- New York

Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn and Quakers in 1681 Wanted a place to practice religion freely Very friendly relationship with Native Americans Made Philadelphia the capital- “City of Brotherly Love” Invited other Europeans to settle- many skilled craftsmen made the colony money

New Jersey First explored by the Dutch in 1609 Settlements by the Swedish and Dutch throughout the 1600s Became a British colony in 1664
