Embracing Wikipedia in the University Classroom Dr Toni Sant School of Arts and New Media – Scarborough Campus

Wikipedia is the Devil Toni Sant | 2012 | 2 THE GOLDEN RULE: Do not quote Wikipedia unless youre writing about this significant wiki project and/or you want to compare its contents with those in a scholarly source such as a book or an article in an academic journal. Do not quote other encyclopedias or dictionaries either! Use Wikipedia as a spring board for further research

Providing a support mechanism Toni Sant | 2012 | 3 to ensure that our students: – discover ways to produce data on the internet rather than just consume it (i.e. Web2.0 basics) – understand how a wiki really works - collaboration + crowd-sourcing – comprehend difference in viewpoints - subjective / objective – learn to distinguish online sources - reliable / less reliable / unreliable

Enhancing study skills Toni Sant | 2012 | 4 Basic technical proficiency (read/write web) Critical thinking Writing (objectivity + neutrality) Research skills (esp. referencing) Collaboration and interaction

School of Arts & New Media Since 2009/10 – Applied and Interactive Theatre 2 for Theatre & Performance students Since 2010/11 – Psychology of Internet Behaviour for Web Design & Development students From 2012/13 – Interaction, Experience & Engagement for Digital Art & Design students

The Assignment Create a Wikipedia page about… OR Edit an existing Wikipedia page about… – Article subject choices depend on course materials – Content is given more importance when assignment is for a module not focused on aspects of Internet studies directly
