  A patient counsellor is a friend, A philosopher, A Guide, An Inspirer, A Demonstrator, A Translator, An information provider, A catalyst for decision making, A comforter, A kingpin, Who is a counsellor to the paient?

Importance of paediatric counselling  The ophthalmologist diagnoses the problem, and parents are briefed in their language the issue in a convincing way and necessary support is provided to undergo the treatment  Parents on hearing from the doctor that their few days / months the kid needs surgery are gripped with shock Cont…..

 They come to the counsellor with this shock  Then anxiety, fear and suspicion pre-closes all the avenues for corrective steps. Slowly they start to deny undergoing surgery by giving lots of excuses  After prolonged dialogue by the counsellors on the benefits of surgery and treatment

Follow up  The main importance of counselling going to the parents are:  The counsellor guide the beneficiaries in the administration of medicine, re-check up following the process, of treatment, diet and after care in medicines.  They avoid tedious, waiting time, to meet the paediatrician for minor problem, convert the medical jargons in the meaningfull and understandable language.

Common problem faced in paediatric counselling Child Related Problems:  Refuse to put glass  Refuse to do patching  Refuse to apply medicines  Playful and notable to explain their visual defects  Adamant in not obeying to the parents and the counsellor  Not adhering for the advice

Parents related problems  Parents are not aware of surgery related matters  Parents do not follow the treatment properly  Parents hesitate to put glasses after surgery  Parents do not pay attention to the early symptoms that the child reports Cont….

Ex:  If the child says of irritation in the eye or not able to follow the blackboard in the school  Fear in their mind complicates issues  No time for them to attend on their children  Very poor to meet even their daily needs

Treatment Related Problem  Parents do not bring the child after surgery  Irregular in follow up  Parents are not regular in putting drops  Unaffordable treatment costs lead to stoppage of treatment  Not following the instructions before & after surgery
