By the end of the day today, IWBAT… Calculate & convert SI Units of measurement By the end of the day today, IWBAT… Calculate & convert SI Units of measurement Why it matters in LIFE: The vast majority of the planet uses these alternate standards of measurement. Why it matters in THIS CLASS: You will need to master measurement and graphing to ensure a minimum success rate of 85%!

Agenda Do Now3 min Lab Instructions (Pptx)5 min Group Sorting2 min Data Collection & Completion41 min

Friday, 08/29/14 TEKS: P.2A: Organize and evaluate data, making inferences on the data produced during laboratory experimentation. By the end of today, IWBAT… Explain, calculate and convert SI Units of measurement Essential Question: What are SI Units of measurement? Topic: Scientific Methods

Expectations (Lab)  Eyes on me when I am giving directions  Identify important information on the Pptx slides  Raise your hand if you have a question or need help

Height vs. Mass Lab  The purpose of this lab is to review the graphing and math skills you will need to be successful in Physics. Next week we will start by graphing motion in 1-dimension!

Question of the Day  Just like real scientists and engineers, when we do labs, we are going to have one question that we will work to answer, ensuring that we are constantly using the process of the Scientific Method and applying our learning to real-life situations Question: If we know height, can we determine mass?

Introduction  Questions drive scientific discovery. Through a systematic process, scientists and engineers test hypotheses, expanding our knowledge of the universe. In an experiment, the scientist or engineer is only allowed to change on variable at a time.

Graphing the Independent and Dependent Variables  If you are measuring the amount of bacteria over time, what is the independent and dependent variable? Independent Variable on the x-axis! Dependent Variable on the y-axis!

Laboratory Question  If Ms. McNutt is 5 foot 3 inches tall, what is her mass?

Pre-Laboratory Questions  Take 10 minutes to answer the pre-laboratory questions with your partner  When you are finished, eyes on me.

Independent and Dependent Variable  The variable that is being changed by the experimenter is called the ______________________ variable.  The variable that changes as result of the independent variable is called the ______________________ variable.  In other words, the ________________________ depends on the _______________________. Independent Dependent Independent variable Dependent variable

Quick Checks!  The score you receive on a test depends on the time you spent studying.  Independent variable? Time spent studying  Dependent variable? Test score  The amount you sweat depends on the temperature.  Independent variable? Temperature  Dependent variable? Amount of sweat

Procedure and Data Collection  Complete Steps 1-4

Graphing What should we label the x-axis? y-axis? Height (cm) Mass (kg) Mass vs. Height Graph

Best-Fit Line Best-fit lines help us to see trends in data. Let’s apply a best-fit line to this data to analyze our results.

Best-fit line

Slope! Slope = 2

Equation of a Line You already solved for slope! (plug in for m)

What is Ms. McNutt’s mass?  Using your graph, what is my mass based on my height?  Now use your equation for your best-fit line to find my mass  Is my height a x-value or a y-value?  Input and solve.  Do your 2 answers match up?

Conclusion  Accuracy is the degree of closeness of a measurement to the actual value.  Precision is the degree to which a measurement can be repeated and get the same result. We will be working with these two ideas in our next lab next week.

Closing Reminders: You should fill out your Unit 01 Cover Sheet!! Keep your binders organized: first binder quiz on 09/12/14
