SENSITIZATION OBJECTIVES University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 2 1. To emphasize the importance of strategic planning in all aspects of university life: institutional culture, teaching, learning, research, internationalization, quality assurance, administration, governance and community service; 2. To emphasize UI’s commitment to entrenching a culture of strategic planning in all its units; 3. To underline the role of staff, students and stakeholders in UI’s strategic planning process and foster individual and collective ownership of the process; 4. To facilitate the process of strategic planning by all Units.

Vision of University of Ibadan University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 5 To be a world class institution for academic excellence geared towards meeting societal needs.

Mission of University of Ibadan University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 6  To expand the frontiers of knowledge through the provision of excellent conditions for learning and research.  To produce graduates who are worthy in character and sound judgment.  To contribute to the transformation of society through creativity and innovation.  To serve as a dynamic custodian of society’s salutary values and thus sustain its integrity.

ATTAINING UI’S VISION AND MISSION University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 7  To realize UI’s vision and mission, a culture of strategic planning must be entrenched.  All staff, students and other stakeholders of the University have roles to play in the strategic planning process.

WHAT IS A STRATEGY? A strategy refers to the actions, management approach and philosophy adopted by an organization operating in a competitive environment to achieve some carefully selected goals and objectives within a specified timeframe. WHAT IS A STRATEGIC PLAN? University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 9 A strategic plan is a structured roadmap that  an institution employs to progressively achieve its vision and mission,  contains goals, objectives, initiatives, timelines, etc,  sets out a step-by-step, proactive approach to reach the stated goals,  declares roles to key stakeholders, especially staff, students and alumni to ensure the effective implementation of specific tasks,

University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 10 A strategic plan is a structured roadmap that  is usually implemented over specified time periods, e.g. 5 year-periods,  establishes a common vocabulary and implementation framework for all stakeholders,  empowers all stakeholders to contribute effectively to the University’s development process.

WHAT A STRATEGIC PLAN WILL DO FOR UI A strategic plan will  enable UI to make strategic choices and realize specified strategic goals,  allow UI to strategically prioritize its activities,  provide stakeholders with clear statements of UI’s short-term goals and objectives,  strengthen UI to respond to competition and change in higher education and the world of work,  be collectively owned by all stakeholders. STRATEGIC PLANS University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 13 UI has been implementing two main strategic plans:  Internationalization Strategic Plan ( ), and  University Strategic Plan ( ).  The timeframe of 5 years for implementing the activities in the plans will expire in December  There is now a need to formulate new plans for the 5-year period

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S ACTION University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 14  Towards producing new versions of UI’s main strategic plans for the 5-year period , the VC inaugurated a University-wide Committee on August 8, 2014, with Professor G. O. S. EKHAGUERE, Department of Mathematics, as Chairman and Professor I. BOLA UDEGBE, Director of the Office of International Programmes, as Co-Chairman.

IMPORT OF VC’S ACTION University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 15 The Vice-Chancellor’s action  underlines UI’s commitment to strategic planning, as a management tool for realizing the institution’s vision and mission,  signals that a culture of strategic planning is progressively being imbibed at UI,  demonstrates that UI is determined to be a truly world-class institution.

COMMITTEE’S TERMS OF REFERENCE University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 16 The Committee’s terms of reference are:  to assess and review the University Strategic Plan ( ) and the Internationalization Strategic Plan ( ), taking into account emerging national and global developments in the higher education sector, and produce draft strategic plan documents for the five-year period from 2015 to  to adopt an inclusive approach for eliciting the participation and contribution of the University community and other stakeholders to the development of the draft strategic plan documents.

COMMITTEE’S ACTIVITIES University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 17 The Committee  held its inaugural meeting in the Senate Chamber on August 8, 2014, and then  structured its membership into a number of Sub- Committees.  The Sub-Committees have since swung into action.

STAKEHOLDERS’ RESPONSIBILITY University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 22  All units of the University should endeavour to participate actively in the strategic planning process.  All students also have the responsibility to participate actively in the strategic planning process through their Units.  All stakeholders should endeavour to interact directly with the Committee by submitting memoranda or other items electronically to

HOW UNITS CAN PARTICIPATE Committee will require the following information from each Unit:  state of the Unit (strengths, challenges/weaknesses, opportunities, and threats),  Unit’s vision and mission, properly aligned with the UI’s vision and mission,  Unit’s key strategic goals, objectives and planned activities during the 5-year period from , University of Ibadan: Sensitization on Strategic Planning 23

 Unit’s key strategic goals, objectives and planned activities in the area of internationalization during the five year period from ,  Unit’s estimate of the human and material resources that it is likely to require to achieve its goals,  information, comments or suggestions that the Unit thinks might assist the Committee in the implementation of its assignment.
