Role of ADA Education Committee “Empower dietetics educators in preparing students for a successful career continuum”

Charge as Identified by ADA BOD Encourage, initiate, and monitor dietetics education activities, Assess and make recommendations on critical issues related to dietetics education, Provide guidance, leadership, and resources to dietetics educators, including non-RD dietetics educators,

Charge (continued) Identify and evaluate trends which have an impact on dietetics education and determine best practices, Establish and facilitate a communications forum, support system and network among dietetics education programs and RD/non-RD faculty, Prepare and recommend long-range plans for dietetics education, 5

Charge (continued) Provide leadership in the development and maintenance of quality dietetics education programs, Assist existing dietetics education programs in meeting accreditation standards, and Identify research needs for dietetics education topics.

Update on Centralized Application

Dietetic Internship Application Contracted with Liaison International o Robert Montgomery, Attending DEP Area Meetings 2011 DICAS o Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Services Experience creating and managing centralized application services for a number of professional programs (dental schools, PA, PT, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, etc.) Available for September 2010 application 8

Timeline for Spring Match 2011 December 8, site opened for February application date February 15 - site closed to applicants April 6 - after match Clearing House for programs with openings 9

DICAS Participation 202 of 228 programs (88%) participating in the 2011 spring match are using the centralized application system. 10

Applications Applicants matched to a dietetic internship program files will be deleted (temporarily archived). Applicants not matched to a dietetic internship will be saved. o Applicants can update information for future applications to dietetic internships. 11

Use of Simulations in Dietetics Education 13

Role of Simulations in Dietetics Education 14 Conducted surveys on simulations used in dietetics, Definitions of simulations used in dietetics education shared with CADE Programs, Development of Dietetics Educator’s Database/Web site, and Members attendance at two conferences on simulations.

Simulation Survey Purpose of Survey Explored current use of technology in dietetics and allied health education programs Investigated the potential of using simulation to replace some of the face-to-face supervised experiences 15 Outcome: Educators are willing to include simulations as a part of supervised practice.

Dietetic Educator’s Database/Web site Thank you for participating in designing the proposed Web site for dietetics educators. The results: We are designing a Database/Web site for educators to use. Phase one: Case Studies will be requested from educators. 17

Future Plans Two FNCE Programs: Open Discussion: Welcome to the Real World: Case Study Development Partnering Educators and Practitioners Presentation: The Use of Simulations to Enhance Supervised Practice Database/Web site for Educators: Phase I- Case Studies, and Attendance at future simulation conferences 18
