Mass Tourism and Employment

Why can we travel now? It is only recently (in the 20 th Century), that people travel for pleasure. It is because we now have time and money to do so. For example, there are new labour laws that give time for travel. (Most people get at least 3 weeks of paid vacation)

Technology Technology also helps in the ability for people to travel. Inventions of trains, planes and cars and their mass productions give people opportunity to travel

Mass Tourism Is the movement of large numbers of people to specialized tourist locations Places have been created with the intention of being a large tourist destination ▫Resort towns ▫Theme parks ▫Tourism business districts

Example: Banff, Canada A town that was made around Banff Springs Hotel

Example: Banff, Canada Cont’d nzshttp:// nzs

Package Vacations A vacation that somebody else makes the travel arrangements, including transportation and accommodations and sometimes meals and entertainment. All vacationers have to do is relax and enjoy.

Specialized Resorts Today, they cater to a persons every need. They don’t though put you into the local culture. Example: Disney NSQhttp:// NSQ

Working in Tourism 1:15 workers (approx 123 million worldwide) work in tourism One of the 3 major types of international trade (oil and cars being the other 2)

There are two main kinds of tourism employment ▫Direct ▫Indirect

Direct Direct: jobs generated by companies and government departments that deal directly with the travelling public. These include: transportation companies, hotels, travel agents, and tourism information offices.

Indirect Indirect: jobs that support the direct employment sector For example: a resort hotel must have brochures and stationary printed so it will have a local printing company do the job
