Naxos Music Library database accessible through ESTER

Process description Testing sample records in our catalogue Buying MARC21 records from Naxos Uploading batch into our system Customizing records with Global Update function Ready for using

Time and human resource First test samples received in September 2006 The whole batch in December 2006 Press release at January 31st 2007 The whole process took 5 months, but maybe 3 weeks of real-time work 3 persons: 2 from our library, 1 from ELNET consortium

MARC21 records received =LDR 01610nmm a 4500 =006 m\\\\\\\\h\\\\\\\\ =007 cr\nnannnu\uuu = s2006\\\\hk\\\\\\\\\u\\\\\\\\eng\d =028 \\$aSMCD5211$bNaxos Digital Services Ltd =035 \\$a.b x$bint $c- =040 \\$aHkLN =245 00$aMOZART :$bExsultate, jubilate / HAYDN: Symphony No. 104$h[electronic resource] =246 30$aExsultate, jubilate / HAYDN: Symphony No. 104$h[electronic resource] =260 \\$aHong Kong :$bNaxos Digital Services Ltd.,$c[2006] =440 \0$aCBC. =500 \\$aStreaming audio. =506 \\$aAccess restricted to Ligip{232}a{232}asetav ainult EMTA arvutiv{228}orgus users. =511 0\$aWORKS OF: Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus / Schubert, Franz. =511 0\$aPERFORMERS: Labadie, Bernard (conductor) ; CBC Radio Orchestra ; Gauvin, Karina (soprano) =538 \\$aMinimum system requirements: MS Windows 98SE, 2000, XP with MS IE 6.0 / Mozilla / FireFox 1PR / Netscape 7.1 / Opera 7.53 and Media Player 9.0 / =538 \\$aMode of Access: World Wide Web browser. =650 \0$aMusic$xComputer network resources. =700 1\$aMozart, Wolfgang Amadeus,$d =700 1\$aSchubert, Franz,$d =700 1\$aLabadie, Bernard. =700 1\$aGauvin, Karina. =710 2\$aCBC Symphony Orchestra. =710 2\$aNaxos Digital Services. =773 0\$tNaxos Music Library. =856 40$zConnect to Naxos Music Library$uhttp://ema.edu.ee= at.asp?s=40970%2femanml02&item_code=SMCD5211

Putting the records into our system ELNET consortium’s technical specialist Anneli Sepp added the MARC records into our system

Customizing From Naxos, we had field 856 customized: =856 40$zConnect to Naxos Music Library$uhttp://ema.edu.ee= m/streamcat.asp?s=40970%2femanml02&item_code=SMCD 5211 We decided to customize the records as much as possible to make them look like ordinary records in the catalogue.

Fields we translated 245 |h[electronic resource] / Helisalvestis 511: Composers / Helilooja(d) 538: Minimum system requirements.. 856: |zConnect to Naxos Music Library All the instruments from the field 5XX All the functions of person’s we use in our catalogue (e.g. performer, composer..) We decided to identify the records as sound recordings, not as electronic resources

ALSO: unifying Very different ways to present composer’s names, we tried to unify it With the help of Global Update function we unified 210 performer’s and composer’s name

Example of unifying process (with Global Update)

Variants of one name

Listing duplicates: Deleting NML records and adding links to the “real” records Minimizing the number of duplicates

Results: From that kind of record... =245 00$aMOZART :$bExsultate, jubilate / HAYDN: Symphony No. 104$h[electronic resource] =246 30$aExsultate, jubilate / HAYDN: Symphony No. 104$h[electronic resource] =260 \\$aHong Kong :$bNaxos Digital Services Ltd.,$c[2006] =440 \0$aCBC. =500 \\$aStreaming audio. =506 \\$aAccess restricted to Ligip{232}a{232}asetav ainult EMTA arvutiv{228}orgus users. =511 0\$aWORKS OF: Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus / Schubert, Franz. =511 0\$aPERFORMERS: Labadie, Bernard (conductor) ; CBC Radio Orchestra ; Gauvin, Karina (soprano) =538 \\$aMinimum system requirements: MS

...into this:

Why all this? Positive and negative sides Positive: recordings are searchable via OPAC Users can access more recordings than we have on the shelves easily and quickly The recordings are often found by the users, who don’t know how to search Negative: They can’t be searched with general rules (except authors) Sometimes the number of licences is increased and the account blocked

Usage statistics of NML in EAMTL April April May May June June July July

Thank you!
