Chapter 5, Lesson 4 Mixtures

What are mixtures? Trail mix, is an example of a mixture! Mixture, a physical combination of substances. These substances remain the same even though they are close together. (Mixed vegetables, are an example of a mixture!)

Different types of Mixtures If a mixture has parts that you can plainly see, it is said to be heterogeneous. If a mixture has parts that you can not plainly see, but need a microscope to view, it is a suspension. A suspension will separate or settle over time. If a mixture has parts that you can not plainly see, but need a microscope to view, and it does not separate or settle, it is a colloid.

What is a solution? A mixture, that looks the same is a homogeneous mixture. It even looks the same under a microscope! In a solution, the part being dissolved is the solute. (Chocolate milk mix, is the solute.) In a solution, the part that dissolves other substances is the solvent. (Milk, or water is the solvent.)

What is a solution?

What is an alloy? An alloy is a solution of a metal and another solid (often another metal) Stainless steel is an alloy made up of Iron, Chromium and Carbon. The combined elements give Stainless steel specific properties, such as resistance to rust!

Solution Limits The max amount of a solute that can be dissolved in a solvent is called the solubility. Solubility often depends on temperature.

How can you take mixtures apart? A physical change in an object is one that can be observed and does not change the fundamental composition of the object. Physical changes are needed to take a mixture apart.

How can you take mixtures apart? Filter a substance Use a magnet to separate magnetic from nonmagnetic

How can you take mixtures apart? Coffee floats and Tea sinks Distillation: Boiling water

Separating Liquids Chromatography is a method for analyzing complex mixtures (such as ink) by separating them into the chemicals from which they are made. projects/paper_chroma.html projects/paper_chroma.html

How are mixtures used? Many drinks are solutions with sugar, or other particles, dissolved inside. Many foods are colloids, such as cheese, low-fat milk, whipped cream, gelatin, and marshmallows. Most cleaning supplies are mixtures, too! Solutions of ammonia are used to clean windows, countertops, and much more. Read the ingredients of your favorites and see what they are made of!
