Dangling & Misplaced Modifiers: Activity Image Source:
Review: What is a Dangling or Misplaced Modifier? Misplaced - a word or phrase that causes confusion because it is located within a sentence so far away from the word(s) to which it refers Ex: Portia rushed to the store loaded with cash to buy the birthday gift. Better: Portia, loaded with cash, rushed to the store to buy the birthday gift. Dangling - a word or phrase that modifies another word or phrase that has not been stated clearly within the sentence Ex: Having finished dinner, the football game was turned on. Better: Having finished dinner, Joe turned on the football game.
Here’s What to Do: Step 1 – Choose a dangling/ misplaced modifier strip from the pile. Step 2 – Using markers and/or colored pencils, draw a humorous picture to illustrate this dangling/misplaced modifier. Each picture should include: An illustration of the dangling/misplaced modifier, the actual sentence underneath it, and a corrected sentence on the back. We will share our creations!
