DANGLING AND MISPLACED MODIFIERS

Modifiers are words that modify words and phrases. Adjectives and adverbs are modifiers, but phrases can act as modifiers too. Sometimes, modifiers get in the wrong position in a sentence and modify the wrong things.

D/M A dangling modifier appear to modify the wrong word or a word that’s not included in the sentence. Walking down the street, the wind blew me over. (The wind is walking down the street?) Correct: Walking down the street, I was blown over by the wind.

D/M A misplaced modifier has been placed incorrectly and therefore modifies something it should not. The teacher returned the essays to the students marked with her comments. Correct: The teacher returned the essays marked with her comments to the students.

D/M MODIFIERS 1.On the top shelf of the bookcase, Louie could not find his dictionary anywhere. 2.As the man walked up the drive, Bowser started barking wildly. 3.Aware that he couldn’t jump the fence without hurting himself, Mark instead walked through the gate. 4.The elderly neighbor gave my son a new coloring book that lives three doors down.
