Hardware vs Software Hardware: A physical part of the computer which you can touch. Software: A set of instructions which is run to perform tasks on your computer. Software is used to control the hardware. Separate the following into Hardware and Software: Spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel) Scratch CD-ROM drive Printer Monitor Webcam Speakers Word Processor (Microsoft Word) Operating System (Windows 7) Desktop Publisher (Microsoft Publisher) PROJECT OR

Input vs Output Some hardware devices are used to input instructions into a computer. Others are used to output data. Find images of some input devices and output devices and place them in the relevant column Input Output

Processor A computer takes an input, processes it and produces an output. The processor in a computer is known as a CPU An example is: INPUT: User enters a number (10) PROCESS: Multiply it by 5 OUTPUT: Computer displays the answer 50 on the monitor Sometimes the result of a process is stored for later use rather than being OUTPUT. Software programs are also loaded from storage. Other than typing letters and them appearing on the screen, what other INPUT-PROCESS- OUTPUTS can you think of? Add as many slides for as many examples that you can think of: See next slide for hints
