LISTEN HRE4M

 When New Mexico became part of the USA and the first court session opened in the new state, the presiding judge was a hardened old former cowboy and Indian fighter.  He took his place on the bench and the case opened. A man was charged with horse stealing. The case for the prosecution was made; the plaintiff and his witness were duly heard.

 Whereupon the attorney for the defendant stood up and said, “ And now, Your Honour, I should like to present my client’s side of the case.”  Said the judge, “Sit down. That won’t be necessary. It would only confuse the jury!” (De Mello, Taking Flight, pp )

 1. Discuss the pros and cons of this decision making process.  2. Give an example which is similar to this type of decision making.

 “Ethics is a practical science, as Aristotle pointed out.  Its goal is action: a life well-lived.  It is not enough to analyze a situation. One must come to a definite judgement on what ought to be done and then do it.  Ethical analysis, therefore, should be directed toward judgement.”

“Qualities of a good ethical judgement: 1. It is consistent with the facts. 2. It has a reasonable and coherent justification. 3. It is based on sound ethical principles. 4. The benefits outweigh the costs.

5. It respects the autonomy and basic human rights of all the stakeholders. 6. It is fair to all. In particular it does no further harm to the disadvantaged. 7. It is universal-izable. 8. It is consistent with existing laws and norms unless there is a very compelling reason to violate them. 9. There are no better alternatives.” (Michael McFarlane, Santa Clara U)

 LISTEN is an acronym for the steps in a decision-making process:  Look for the facts  Imagine possibilities  Seek insight beyond your own  Turn inward  Expect God's help  Name your decision
