ISLAM – the Muslim religion Iman Centre Conwy A mosque that was opened in 2002

Iman Centre Conwy Iman Centre is a mosque for the Muslims of the Conwy region, North Wales. Many Muslims gather here to pray every day. The building is a chapel that was no longer used by Christians. The Muslims have changed and altered the inside so that it can be used as a mosque.

Iman Centre Conwy The first thing everyone does - Muslims and visitors – before entering the mosque itself is remove their shoes.

Iman Centre Conwy Muslims believe that it is important for them to pray together, at the same time every day. Therefore they have specific times of the day to pray five times a day. The additional clock notes the times for prayer on Friday, the Muslim special day of the week.

Iman Centre Conwy Before prayer Muslims wash themselves in a purpose built bathroom. There is special way and order to wash in preparation for prayer; this is known as Wudu.

Iman Centre Conwy The inside is plain – there are usually no pictures in a mosque. The people pray on the floor.

Iman Centre Conwy Muslims always pray towards Makkah in Saudi Arabia. The Mihrab, the alcove in the wall, shows the Qiblah, the direction of Makkah. Direction of Makkah mihrab

Iman Centre Conwy In front of the Mihrab stands the Minbar, a small platform where the Imam, the leader of the worship can stand.

Iman Centre Conwy A gallery in the mosque allows men and women to pray separately.

Iman Centre Conwy An important part of the mosque is the Madrassah, where the children gather to learn reading the Quran in Arabic and to learn about their religion. People will also use the Madrassah to study and discuss the Quran and learn more about Islam.

Iman Centre Conwy The mosque or the Masjid is a very important centre for the Muslim. Here he/she feels a part of the Ummah, the world- wide Muslim community.
