Desktop Deployment Planning Service DDPS In Action Series Overview Session 7 Delivering Office-only DDPS engagements Q & A Agenda

Desktop Deployment Planning Service DDPS v2 Common Office Questions and Challenges Can I use DDPS to deliver Office-centric deployment guidance? How to identify Office-only engagements How do I fulfill a DDPS engagement covering Office only? How do I fulfill the deliverables requirements for an Office-centric DDPS engagement?

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office Only DDPS Office only baseline Many organizations may wish to focus the bulk of a DDPS engagement on issues related to deploying a standardized configuration of 2007 Office. This guide serves as an appendix to the core DDPS collateral and identifies recommended strategies for delivering an Office focused DDPS session. It remains the responsibility of the delivery consultant to review the DDPS Delivery Guide for complete guidance on this topic. This is not a session on how to do Office with XP. Office on XP or Vista requires the same PLAN / BUILD / DEPLOY / OPERATE approach core to DDPS engagements

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Identifying Office-only engagements Like any other DDPS, the delivery consultant and/or the partner account team for the customer should conduct a PreFlight Briefing via conference call 1-2 weeks before the anticipated kick-off of the DDPS. It will be at this point that you will have identified (or confirmed) that the customer will require extra emphasis on Office 2007 deployment. Key indicators may include the following: Already deployed their base OS with Office 2003 and desire to follow up with Office 2007 deployment May want to upgrade Office 2007 to Office 2007 SP1 May want to upgrade older versions of Office in place May want to standardize unsanctioned configurations or components Want to standardize both their Modern Desktops (Vista + Office 2007) and their legacy desktops (2000/XP + older versions of Office) on a single Office Platform

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Sample on-site agenda Like any other DDPS, the delivery consultant and/or the partner account team for the customer plan to follow roughly the traditional DDPS agenda with a focus on Office Preflight Questionnaire Strategy Briefing Session Architectural Design Session Proof of Concept Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4 – Day 10 09:00 – 12:00 Introductions Strategy Briefing Session Deployment Overview Office Versions /Features Build – Office Customization Tool Build – Imaging Build - MUI Operate – GPO/ADMX Operate – Patching Operate – User Training Proof of Concept in either:  Consultant’s VPC environment  Customers Virtual or Physical environment 12:00 Lunch 13: :00 Plan – OMPM Collect Plan – Office Document Formatting (XML) Plan - ACT Plan – WVHA Plan – USMT Deploy – SMS or SCCM Deploy - SoftGrid Deploy - MUI Operate – SCOM/MOM Office Management Pack Lab planning Lab setup

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Strategy Briefing Session Start with the DDPS SBS Overview deck and customize for the customer based on PFQ feedback and an Office focus. Things to keep in mind: PLAN Office Migration and Planning Tools – OMPM Office Security Guide – OSG Application Compatibility Toolkit – ACT User State Migration Tool - USMT BUILD Integration of Office 2007 and the BDD Workbench Office Customization Tool – OCT DEPLOY [Deployment –ready infrastructures (SMS, SoftGrid, Group Policy, Logon scripts, etc) Office Compatibility Pack OPERATE Office management strategies and tools – GPO, ADMX

Desktop Deployment Planning Service DDPS v2 Office only demos Create Demo Environment Manually BDD Hydration Technical Demonstration Kit Use Virtual PC! DDPS Provides Demo Scripts Videos Ultimately relies on your own expertise

Desktop Deployment Planning Service 1, 3, 5, 10 days of desktop deployment planning and consulting services Demonstrations will typically take place during the 3, 5, 10 day workshops Demonstrations will typically take place in the Architectural Design Session and Proof of Concept (sometimes Strategy Briefing Session) DDPS v2 When to Demo Pre-Engagement Questionnaire Discover as much as possible before meeting with customer 1 st time Strategy Briefing Session Overview - Explains the process at high level Typically conducted with the BDMs and CxO- level customer resources attending Usually 1-2 hours Architectural Design Session Technology discussions based on technical issues from PEQ, and business drivers from SBS Usually 3 days Proof of Concept (Virtual) Conducted using consultant’s Virtual environment Customized to show recommendations from ADS Not left with the customer Proof of Concept (Physical) Built using customers lab and hardware Constructed using BDD Hydration scripts Can be left with the customer

Desktop Deployment Planning Service DDPS v2 Office only demos (SBS/ADS) Demonstrate or discuss some or all of the following during the SBS: Using the WHVA tools to identify Office 2007 capable platforms Using the Application Compatibility Tool (ACT) kit to identify the various Office versions Identifying Office compatibility issues with Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) Using Office Converter Tool to do a bulk conversion of Office files to the XML format Using SMS inventory to identify hardware platforms and deployed Office versions Using the Asset Inventory Service to identify hardware and Office versions for remote or unmanaged computers Adding Office 2007 to the BDDW as a core image component BDD Workbench and Office Customization Tool integration Customizing Office 2007 with the Office Customization Tool Deploying Office 2007 with Systems Management Server (or SCCM) Deploying Office 2007 with SoftGrid Deploying Office 2007 with Group Policy

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Architectural Design Session (sample) In general a reduced focus on imaging or deployment technologies Deployment Overview (optional)–may need to revisit the Deployment Overview deck at a more technical level. Again, this should be 1-2 slides on each area of the BDD wheel.

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Architectural Design Session (sample) In general a reduced focus on imaging or deployment technologies Office Deployment – Covers the bulk of the ADS Serves as the core Drill into OMPM and OCT XML file formats Addressing the “when to convert my docs” question When to deploy the Office Compatibility Package Deployment Options Thick, Thin, Virtualized, Side By Side, Viewers only

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Architectural Design Session (sample) Core Infrastructure –Your goal with this deck is to understand what the customer has in place now, what could be used and develops an action plan or recommendations. This may include adjustments to AD, DNS, DHCP, WINS, SMS, security, etc. Anything that would block or impede successful targeting of an Office package. Application Compatibility – focus the deck on the core inventory features of ACT. Namely deployed versions of Your goal with this deck is to understand what they have deployed currently both in terms of versions of Office and any integrated applications. While ACT doesn’t necessarily show dependencies or call out Office add-ins, having a manifest simplifies identification.

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Architectural Design Session (sample) Imaging – focus the deck and the discussions of options and benefits of adding Office 2007 to their core image. Be sure to highlight BDDW/OCT integration here. Your goal with this deck is to ensure that the customer understands how Office-only deployments should be synchronized with core imaging processes. USMT – this topic area with respect to Office should focus on the fact that USMT already knows how to handle most aspects of an Office to Office deployment. Your goal here is to help the customer understand and identify any Office settings that may need to be persisted not only for Office only deployment but for their future migrations and refresh scenarios.

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Architectural Design Session (sample) Packaging – most likely won’t be needed unless there are Office add-ins which require packaging or can’t be chained as part of an Office Install. Your goal here is to help identify how Office will be deployed (SMS, GPO, logon script, 3 rd party SWD). Each of these solutions may have different requirements in terms of flags, and command strings. SoftGrid – can possibly address key co-existence and training issues for the customer. Discuss how SoftGrid can be used to deploy either Office 2007 or older versions of Office for side-by-side requirements

Desktop Deployment Planning Service Office only DDPS Proof of Concept Adding Office 2007 to the BDDW as a core image component Customizing Office 2007 with the Office Customization Tool Add Office language pack to the Office build process in the BDD Workbench Add the most recent patches to the Office build process using the Office -> Updates folder in the BDD Workbench Deploy and use the WHVA tools to identify Office 2007 capable platforms Deploy and use the Office Migration and Planning Manager (OMPM) Gather details about files in the environment and determine file-level issues Convert documents to 2007 Office XML format Deploy and use Application Compatibility Tool kit to identify the various Office versions in production Using SMS inventory to identify hardware platforms and deployed Office versions Using the Asset Inventory Service to identify hardware and Office versions for remote or unmanaged computers Deploy Office using SMS 2003/SCCM Deploy Office using SoftGrid
