Soda and Mentos Project
Presentation transcript:

Procedure 1.Place tape on the wall above the experiment every meter to have an estimate point for the height 2.Spread the bottles apart, on a flat surface (such as a sidewalk) 3.Sort out the Mentos into groups of 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 and put each group into a roll of paper to act as the dropper into the soda 4.Have one person recording the time of the fountain, one person estimating the height of the fountain, one person recording the info, and one person dropping the Mentos into the bottles of Diet Coke 5.Then repeat step 4 for each group of Mentos and each bottle of Diet Coke (there should be five sets of data at the end) 6.Now clean up your mess! Abstract Our hypothesis was: the more Mentos added to the Diet Coke the higher and longer the eruption will be. In our experiment we wanted to test how long and how high the coke will erupt with different amounts of Mentos. During our testing we used five liters of Diet Coke with differing amounts of Mentos in each liter (3 in the first, 5 in the second, and on to 11 Mentos in the fifth liter). During our testing, we had one error with the emptying of the Mentos into the Diet Coke. For the fourth liter 9 Mentos were supposed to be dropped into the Coke and only 6 made it in because of a malfunction with the dropping apparatus. We acknowledged the error and included it in our data because it shows that things can still go wrong in a successful experiment. Our results showed us that the more Mentos added, the shorter and higher the eruption will be. Background Info/Intro For our Mentos and Diet Coke experiment we used Diet Coke, Mentos, a timer, and a meter stick for measuring. We tested both how high the coke would erupt and how long the eruption would last. The main ingredients in Diet Coke are carbonated water, caramel color, Aspartame, Phosphoric Acid, Citric Acid, Potassium Benzoate, Natural flavors, and caffeine. The main ingredients in Mentos are sugar, wheat glucose syrup, hydrogenated coconut oil, rice starch, gum arabic, sucrose esters of fatty acides, gellan gum, natural flavors. The ingredients combine to create an acid-base reaction between the Mentos and Diet Coke ultimately resulting in an explosion of Diet Coke. We decided to test the relationship between the amount of Mentos and both the height and length of the eruption. Our hypothesis was: the more Mentos added to the Diet Coke, the higher and longer the eruption will be.

# of mentosLength of eruption (sec) Height (m) *3.05*2.9* Conclusion: Our hypothesis was that the more mentos we add the longer and higher the eruption will be. Now based on that we learned that the less mentos you add the longer the eruption and weaker the height. We can apply this in life by learning not to mix mentos and diet coke in your stomach. Our errors were that not all of the mentos were dropped in to the bottle, some of them fell out. We also in that case were not able to get an accurate reading. Our modifications for next time is having a more efficient way of getting the mentos into the bottles. * When we tried to add 9 Mentos to a liter of Diet Coke, there was an error and only 6 Mentos were added.
