State of the Art Conference Outcome Measures in Rehabilitation January 2010

JRRD Mission To responsibly evaluate and disseminate scientific research findings impacting the rehabilitative healthcare community VHA HANDBOOK

Top Four Reasons to Publish with JRRD High Visibility: JRRD is an established and well-respected journal widely distributed to both national and international audiences in print and electronic format. Internet downloads from the JRRD Web site totaled 4.6 million in Accessibility and Archiving: Research is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. No subscription or registration is required to access full text articles online. Articles are archived on JRRD's Web site and within PubMed and many other abstract indexing companies. Legacy archival materials dating back to inception are available on the JRRD Web site. No Use Restrictions: After publication in the print edition, you are free to print out copies of your article to share with your colleagues or post it on the Web. Dissemination of your work for educational and scientific purposes is permitted without restriction and encouraged. Ease of publication: Electronic submission and peer-review makes publishing your research simple and efficient.

The purpose of a JRRD single-topic issue (STI) is to produce a publication that focuses on a particular aspect of rehabilitation science. The STI will serve to illuminate the current leading edge protocols and research on the topic.

It is not solely a review of available literature or repackaging of long established trends in the area covered.

The Standards for Compiling STIs All authors and topics will be established and agreed on by the Associate Editor (AE) and JRRD Editor before assignment to the issue. Every issue will contain between 12 to 14 papers. The AE may solicit more than that to replace potentially rejected papers and authors who withdraw their submissions. No issue will contain more than three review papers. The AE is responsible for content, reviewer selection, and following up on delinquent author/reviewer responses. The AE will ensure that all reviewers have been prescreened and have agreed to review the assigned papers BEFORE submission to the Administrative Editor.

Continued The Administrative Editor will be responsible for all duties not performed by the AE, including reviewer entry and contacts, author contacts as to uploading and meeting timelines and benchmarks, and ensuring the issue is progressing according to schedule. No more than two reviewers per paper can be an author on another paper in the issue. ALL papers will have three reviewers, minimum. All submissions, reviews, AE recommendations, Editor decisions, and production will be done through Manuscript Central. The AE will produce a Guest Editorial for the issue and will provide a digitized “head shot” photograph for publication with the Guest Editorial.

STI-Author Submission Guidelines All submissions must be made by the authors uploading their manuscripts on to the Manuscript Central Web site at This site is user friendly and self explanatory. The author will be asked to supply preferred reviewers. Since STIs are unique in that the AE will provide the preferred reviewers, the uploading author should “X” out the fields for this query. When asked for the “Manuscript Subtype” the authors should choose the appropriate one from the pull-down menu. Every STI will have its own unique type listed in the pull-down menu.

Author Guidelines Cont. Manuscript Central will only accept 5 authors in its author field(s). Do not despair! If accepted, the published version of the papers will have all authors noted on the title page in the order listed, even if the number exceeds 5. The AE is the source for all questions concerning content. Any questions concerning the operation of Manuscript Central should be directed to Lloyd Tinker, Manuscripts submitted prior to final acceptance should have all figures and tables embedded in the text in the text file. After acceptance, the final version on CD and attached to the should have them stripped out and put into separate file(s).

Author Guidelines Cont. All submissions require an “At a Glance” statement in a separate file. Detailed explanations and standards for submission can be found in the JRRD Editorial Policies,

Manuscript Decision Number of Manuscripts Percentage of Total Accept211.0% Accept Revision % EIC Immediate Accept % EIC Immediate Reject 623.0% Further Revision Needed % Major Revision % Minor Revision % Reject % Reject - Inappropriate 10.0% Reject Revision633.0% Total: % All papers undergo at least 1, if not 2, rounds of revision, and most of those are then accepted.

Important Consideration All papers submitted for STIs are reviewed and none are guaranteed acceptance. We regularly reject works submitted to STIs that do not survive the review process.

JRRD Impact Factor

Citations as of 15 July 2009

Back of the Envelope Elsevier announced in 2006 that there had been 1 billion downloads since the launch of Science Direct Portal in April 1999 Science Direct has 3,143 titles 1 billion downloads in 7 years, or 143 million or so per year 143 million downloads / 3,143 titles is approx. 45,000 downloads per year per journal SO compare 4.6 million downloads for JRRD with 45,000 Caveat: this calculation makes rather poor assumptions that all titles are downloaded equally, which is probably not true. FYI: Total number of citations in ISI Web of Science since 1900 is 600 million Johan Bollen et al. Clickstream data yields high-resolution maps of science. PLoS ONE. 2009;4(3):1-11.

The JRRD Web site is back with over 5,200 articles, more than 30,000 pages, and 4.6 million downloads for 2009!
