Keys to Success Read Ahead of Lectures Use syllabus and PowerPoint slides to help Bring questions to class on material Do All Assigned Problems and Quizzes Homework problems are required and designed to help you master the material – must be completed prior to taking weekly quiz (Friday at 11:00 p.m.) Can work in groups to help understand the concepts Test yourself with other questions (Prepping for the Exam Questions have answers in back of book) Philosophy - this course is basic intuition but with a new language to express your ideas financially
Homework and Quizzes Your homework is assigned each week in MyFinanceLab (Pearson Lab) and opens on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. There will be a set of problems directly from the book and you get three attempts at each problem. Once you have completed that week’s homework assignment you can then take the weekly quiz. (Once it is opened). The weekly quiz is designed to make sure you understand the chapter material covered that week. Opens every Thursday at 4:00 p.m. It is a ninety minute (maximum time) quiz. The quiz must be completed by each Sunday evening at 11:00 p.m. This is an individual effort just like an exam.
Homework and Quizzes Questions on homework or quizzes? Two Helpful Hints Try and work the homework problems by understanding the process not just the mechanics of the problem Example – when pricing bonds you will have a formula that you can plug in the variables and your calculator or spreadsheet will produce the answer…but if you have the wrong concept on interest rates or number of payments you will get the wrong answer…you must understand the concept of the variable that goes into the formula Working in groups is a good way to test your understanding by explaining your answer to others
Examinations Open Book and Open Notes Questions may be more difficult Efficient use of time a must Notes are your friends…think about how best to use them at lecture time, not when you study for exam Calculators Important tool Know your calculator… Laptops? Not in exams – Not in class – Distracting Device Can use to help solve homework or quiz problems All Electronic Devices – turned off in class
