Developmental Assets Framework: The approach of the YMCAs of USA and Canada, “to protect and prevent rather than react and reform”. Codified by the Search Institute. Young people need a sufficient number to become healthy, competent adults. The Search Institute’s framework is based on the developmental needs of young people in North American middle and high schools.

Translation to a UK context YMCA Capabilities Commission explored the translation of the framework for England. With Demos we are establishing the public policy argument for commissioners to support such an approach, recognising these measures.

Internal Assets Emergent findings from our research: Managing feelings Empathy and sensitivity Positive self-esteem Sense of purpose Responsibility Able to hold a conversation Actively engaged in learning Negotiating

Challenges 1. Make assets relevant for young people. 2. Creating a flexible approach to secure ownership of a common framework across a network of independent, autonomous charities. 3. Collating and sharing data. 4. Devising appropriate yet rigorous assessment processes to evaluate developmental assets.

Opportunities 1.Meaningful descriptions. 2.Measuring what counts. 3.Creating a positive culture.
