Cause and Effect Relationships Cause and effect relationships occur when 1 action or event leads directly to another action or event to happen after it. Ex) I planted some carrot seeds in my garden, so 3 weeks later the carrot plants were popping out of the soil.

Directions: Read the following passage and fill in the blanks with the effects or causes. It was a bitter cold and snowy day throughout the city. The temperature had dropped low enough for six inches of snow to fall. This meant no school for the city school children. Jaime and Jessica decided they would build a snowman in the front yard. At lunchtime, they had to stop and return inside to eat hot soup that their mom had made. Each had snow- soaked gloves so they put them in the dryer. Once their gloves were dry, Jaime and Jessica bundled up once more. They headed back outside to their snowman. Since the snow had continued while they ate, Jaime and Jessica had some “repairs” to make on the snowman. The two children worked hard until the sun went down. 1)Since the temperature dropped _______________________. 2) _________________________ because they had to eat lunch. 3) The gloves became dry, therefore,__________________________.

Directions: Read the following passage and fill in the blanks with the effects or causes. River Rafting Adventure Diary Part 1 Thursday: My sister Mei and I are very excited. We arrived at the campgrounds in the pouring rain. Our river guide says it had been raining hard for a few days. Normally, rain would spoil a vacation, but this year we’re going rafting, and rain will make the river run faster. Friday: I never thought rafting would be such hard work! Today we learned how to work as a team in the water. Our guide barked out commands, such as “All forward!” and “Back right!” It was hard to remember that when he yells “Back right,” the left side has to paddle forward. Whenever one of us forgot, it was much harder to steer the raft. We all put on life jackets and helmets so that we wouldn’t get hurt if the raft turned over. 1)_____________________ so the river was running fast. 2) If you forgot what “Back right” meant______________________. 3) __________________________ just in case the raft flipped.

Directions: Read the following passage and fill in the blanks with the effects or causes. River Rafting Adventure Diary Part 2 Saturday: We hit the rapids today! All that practice yesterday paid off. The guide said you can tell the river is higher than normal because you can’t see water-line marks on any of the rocks. That means they are below water! We did a 360-degree turn going through one rapid and even went over a short waterfall. Mei fell out once, but her helmet and life jacket kept her from getting hurt. Sunday: Today was the last day of our river rafting adventure. My arms are about ready to fall off! Still, this year’s vacation was thrilling and fun. I already asked Mom if we could come back next year. 1)You should always wear safety gear so ____________________. 2) The river rafting adventure is hard exercise because_____________________________. 3) Make your own CAUSE AND EFFECT from this excerpt!
