CGI –Nuts and Bolts Day 1 Carrie Manning

Survey Please take five minutes to complete the CGI Survey.

What is CGI? With your table group discuss and record on chart paper what your group thinks CGI is.

What is CGI? CGI is not a traditional primary school mathematics program. Children in CGI classrooms spend most of their time solving problems, usually problems that are related to a book the teacher has to read to them, a unit they may be studying outside of mathematics class, or something going on in their lives. Various physical materials are available to children to assist them in solving the problems. Each child decides how and when to use the materials, fingers, paper and pencil; or to solve the problem mentally. Children are not shown how to solve the problems.

What is CGI? A CGI classroom is where you build on the math knowledge of your children according to what they know…You don’t build objectives that say they should be doing this, this, this, and this. You sort of take what they know and build from there. (Susan Gehn, First Grade Teacher)

Ranking Activity On the ranking sheet, read and solve each problem. Scratch paper has been given at each table. Thinking about the different problems from a child’s perspective, rank their level of difficulty on a scale with one being least difficult and 11 being most difficult.
