To Kill a Mockingbird UNIT 3 VOCABULARY

1) Abominable adj. Detestable; unpleasant It is interesting that the abominable snowman is portrayed as a friendly creature.

2) Aloof adj. Distant; unfeeling Remaining aloof is not a characteristic most people would associate with actors. They seem to be successful based on their ability to exist in their emotions.

3) Auspicious adj. Pleasant; good-natured Pancake breakfast, walk on the beach, hanging out with family – all in all it was an auspicious start to my day.

4) Benevolence n. Inclination to perform charitable acts With an intention of showing benevolence I donated my weeknights to working at a food bank.

5) Benign adj. Compassionate; incapable of causing harm If you are a ninja, being described as benign might not be a good thing. However, if you are consulting with a doctor, it is a wonderful word to hear.

6) Contentious adj. Tending to fight; quarrelsome Last semester my fourth hour class was contentious group of students. As a result, we had some wonderful conversations about the issues raised in the literature we studied.

7) Ensue v. To follow immediately afterward When I come home to find my husband seasoning steaks, I know that a delicious dinner will ensue.

8) Fractious adj. Inclined to make trouble; unruly Gimli from The Lord of the Rings can be described as a fractious character; however, he is fiercely loyal to those on the quest with him.

9) Persevere v. To persist in a purpose, idea, or task Those who persevere are more likely to find success in the face of adverse circumstances.

10) Prowess n. Superior skill or ability; strength or courage Regardless of the other reasons he may be well known, Michael Phelps is definitely an example of person with athletic prowess.
