Hispanic Heritage Month El quince de Septiembre - El quince de Octubre

Peru There are approximately 23 million people living in Peru. The capital is Lima. Another important city in Peru is called Cuzco. They export many things such as: copper, zinc, fishmeal, petroleum, oil, lead and coffee. There are many plains, mountains and rainforests in Peru.

Peru’s Culture They mostly eat potatoes, peppers and grains. Their traditional cuisine is called Creole (criolla) it is a mixture of many different Hispanic foods. Peruvians like to do a lot of pottery and weaving. Every year on June 24 they have a festival called Inti Raymi. This is a celebration of the winter solstice. They have many carnivals and festivals also.

Mario Vargas Llosa Mario Vargas Llosa is a novelist, a play writer, and a critic. Mario started his literacy career in Europe, but most of his novels are set in Peru. He went to the University of San Marcos to study literature. After college he worked as a journalist for Cuadernos de Conversacion. He was among the most famous writers who aimed to revitalize the Latin American Novel. In 1997 Mario Vargas Llosa was elected to be the president of the PEN Club International. He is still alive today.
