Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project 17 Start of Pile Driving: August ” Diameter Pipe Piles at Draw Bridge -Minor Fish Kill -Engaged Agencies - “Pile Tapping” proved sufficient

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project October 2001: 300-ton Ringer Crane picking a 160 foot 48 inch steel pipe pile and requiring FAA clearance

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project October 2001: Pile driving shifted to Maryland shoreline

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project 20 March 2002: Pile Driving returned to drawbridge/shipping channel area: - Culmination of Factors: Fish Kill - Re-engaged Agencies - Established Thresholds - Produced Daily Reports - Attempted Alternative BMP’s: - Time-of-Day / Tidal Cycles - Fish Finders - Turbidity Curtains - Considered scare tactics such as charges, horns, and sirens - Air bubble curtains

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Summer 2002: Pile driving shifted back to mid-river

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project 22 - The Project engaged Hi Test Laboratories to conduct pressure wave monitoring using multiple digital oscilloscopes at various radii to capture 500,000 reading per second. - The air bubble curtain was also re- implemented, monitored, and graphed.

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project 23 The Results: -The force exerted by driving 66” piles was as high as 55psi. -Repeated testing approximated fish kill at 6 psi via visual observations. -The steel cofferdams offered 15-50% reduction of the pressure wave. - The air bubble curtain effectively reduced the pile driving pressure wave to less than 2psi when the bubble curtain was adequately contained. -Pressure waves for pile driving are dissimilar to demolition detonations.
