Welcome to Math 6 Today’s topic is… Division (part 2)
The Connector… In our last lesson, we discussed how to divide whole numbers and decimals. In this lesson I will explain how to divide fractions by whole numbers or whole numbers by fractions.
When to use a fractional approach? Mr. Shin has a piece of lumber that is 11 5/8 inches wide. He plans to split the width of lumber into 3 equal pieces. How wide will each piece be?
OBJECTIVE: Each student will: Divide fractions by whole numbers Divide whole numbers by fractions. Divide fractions by fractions
Inverse means ‘opposite.’ Inverse can describe mathematic operations, as in: “Division is the Inverse of Multiplication.” “Subtraction is the Inverse of addition.”
Division of fractions follows the same steps as multiplication of fractions, but there is one additional step. To divide fractions, you need to invert the divisor and then multiply.
To invert a fraction, reverse the numerator and denominator. The special name given to an inverted fraction is reciprocal. Recall that a whole number has a understood denominator of 1.
Julia ate 1/2 pint of chocolate chip ice cream. Mark ate 3/4 pint of vanilla ice cream. How many times more ice cream did Mark eat?
ICE CREAM. Julia ate 1/2 pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Mark ate 3/4 pint of vanilla ice cream. How many times more ice cream did Mark eat?
Lane wants to cut a board into three equal pieces. The board is 5/8 feet long. How long will each piece be?
Laura wants to cut a board into three equal pieces. The board is 5/8 feet long. How long will each piece be?
Norberto has 7/8 of a pizza. The pizza will be divided equally among 6 people. How much will each person get?

Dividing mixed numbers First convert to an improper fraction. Then divide. Example: Julia has 3 1/2 pounds of dog food. She plans to split it equally among her 7 dogs. How much dog food will each dog receive?
