sentence- a group of words that contains a subject, a verb and a complete thought fragment- does not contain a subject, a verb or a complete thought Romeo banished from Verona? Why was Romeo banished from Verona?

simple subject- main word or group of words that tells whom or what the sentence is about simple predicate (or verb)- main word or group of words that tells something about the subject ss The talented Georgia O’Keefe is known for her paintings of huge flowers. sp Montresor led Fortunato to the vault.

A sentence consists of 2 parts: the complete subject and the complete predicate. The complete subject includes the noun/pronoun that is the subject and all the words that go with it. The complete predicate is the word/words that make up the verb and all the words that go with it. cs. cp. (Tybalt) (was Juliet’s cousin.) cs.cp. (The setting of the play) (is fourteenth- century Italy.)

compound subject- two or more subjects joined by a conjuction (usually and or or) that have the same verb cs (Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio) attend the Capulet’s party. compound verb- two or more verbs joined by a conjuction (usually and, but or or) that have the same subject Della sold her hair and bought Jim a watch chain.

complement- word or group of words that completes the meaning of a verb subject complement- completes a linking verb and identifies/modifies the subject Complement Type 1: Subject complements may be predicate nominatives or predicate adjectives. predicate nominative- noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames/identifies the subject predicate adjective- adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies the subject

Predicate Nominatives: “The Most Dangerous Game” is an exciting story. The main characters are Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore. Predicate Adjectives: Miss Postelli is happy. The corn was sweet and buttery.

Complement Type 2: direct object- noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb or that shows the result of the action (verb here must be an action verb) The sniper killed his brother. Although his watch was his most prized possession, Jim sold it. Shakespeare wrote not only great plays but also beautiful sonnets.

Complement Type 3: indirect object- noun or pronoun that precedes the direct object and that usually tells to whom, for whom, to what or for what the action of the verb is done Sheila read the children a story by H.A. Rey. Frank gave the Red Cross a donation. She made her neighbors and friends fruitcakes for Christmas.

Sentence Classification: declarative- makes a statement imperative- makes a request or gives a command interrogative- asks a question exclamatory- expresses strong feeling

independent clause- group of words that can stand by itself as a sentence dependent clause- does not express a complete thought; cannot stand by itself as a sentence dependent clause=subordinate clause

Sentence Structure: simple= one independent clause and no dependent clause compound= two or more independent clauses but no dependent clause complex= one independent clause and at least one dependent clause compound-complex= two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause
