Tuesday, Oct 15 Lesson 3.7 Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers

Objective: To understand how to divide decimals by whole numbers.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers At the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following questions. How can estimating quotients help place the decimal point correctly? When is estimation not accurate?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Example 8.6 ÷ 2.2 ≈ 8 ÷ 2 = 4 When estimating quotients, use comparable numbers that are easily divisible.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers When dividing a decimal by a whole number, divide as with whole numbers. Then place the decimal point in the quotient directly above it’s place in the dividend.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2. Estimate. What is a comparable number for 6.8 that is divisible by 2?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2. Estimate. What is a comparable number for 6.8 that is divisible by 2? 6 6 ÷ 2 = 3

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2. 2)6.8 Dividing a decimal by a whole number. Step 1 – Place the numbers in the dividing bracket.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ ) Dividing a decimal by a whole number. Step 2 – Divide and ignore the decimal point.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ ) Dividing a decimal by a whole number. Step 3 – Bring the decimal point to the quotient, directly above the dividend.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.5÷ 3 = Estimate?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.5÷ 3 = Estimate? 9 ÷ 3 = 3, or 6 ÷ 3 = 2 Step 1?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.5÷ 3 = 3)7.5 Step 2?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.5÷ 3 = 2 5 3) Step 3?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.5÷ 3 = ) It is very important to line the digits up.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Sometimes when dividing the answer needs to be more precise than just having a remainder. When a precise answer is needed, annex zeros and keep dividing until the remainder is zero.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.7÷ 14 Estimate?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.7÷ 14 Estimate? 8 ÷ 16 = ½ or 0.5 Before we start dividing make a multiples list for 14, if needed. 14: 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84……

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.7÷ ) Since we have a remainder, annex a zero and keep dividing. 14: 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84……

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.7÷ )7.70 Annex a zero - 70 and keep dividing : 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84……

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 7.7÷ )7.70 Do not forget to - 70 place the decimal point : 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84……

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 9.48÷ 15 (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 9.48÷ 15 Estimate?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 9.48÷ 15 Estimate? This one is a bit tricky. 7.5 ÷ 15 =.5 15: 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90……

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 9.48÷ )9.480 Annex a zero : 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90……

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 3.49÷ 4. (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 3.49÷ 4. Estimate?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 3.49÷ 4. Estimate? 4 ÷ 4 = 1 Actual Quotient? 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36,40…..

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 3.49÷ ) Annex two zeros : 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36,40…..

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 39.79÷ 3. Round the answer to the nearest tenth. (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 39.79÷ 3. Round the answer to the nearest tenth. Estimate?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 39.79÷ 3. Round the answer to the nearest tenth. 39 ÷ 3 = 13 Actual Quotient? 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33,36,39

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 39.79÷ 3. Round the answer to the nearest tenth ) Even though we have a 07 remainder we can stop -6 here. Why? 19 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33,36,39

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 39.79÷ 3. Round the answer to the nearest tenth ) : 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33,36,39

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 39.79÷ 3. Round the answer to the nearest tenth ) : 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33,36,39

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Lin is making a care package to his brother. The table gives the cost for mailing packages. If Lin’s care package weighs 3 pounds, how much is the cost per pound? (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Lin is making a care package to his brother. The table gives the cost for mailing packages. If Lin’s care package weighs 3 pounds, how much is the cost per pound? )6.740 Annex a zero Because hundredths are the 20 smallest denomination used in -18 money we can round $2.246 to $2.25
