Biography Robert Burns was born in 1759 in Alloway Scotland the son of a poor tenant farmer. He was widely regarded as a national poet and is celebrated world wide. Burns wrote of his own rural experience as well as dealing with themes of patriotism, republicanism, class structure. He was regarded as a pioneer of the romantic movement and after his death he became a great source of inspiration.
Background We all know of his birth on January 25 th, 1759, in Alloway, near Ayr, in a clay cottage built by his father. His education was communal, that is to say that several neighbouring farmers decided to hire a teacher to educate their children. Encouraged by his father, Robert had a wide range of reading, including the English classics of his days, together with the local lore of Scotland, both from songs and tales.
