A God Of Grace and Mercy “Jehovah is gracious and merciful” Psalm 111:4

The Grace and Mercy of God The story of God’s grace and mercy begins with man’s sin in Gen. 3 and runs throughout the Bible God is gracious and merciful toward Israel’s sin (Ex. 33:19; 34:6; Neh. 9:17,31; Isa. 30:18; etc.) God is gracious and merciful toward sin among non- Israelites (Jonah 4:2)

The Grace and Mercy of God God is sovereign in granting his grace and his mercy – he bestows it as he see fit (Rom. 9:15-23; 11:32) Grace is God’s unmerited favor shown in action; a “free gift of God” (Rom. 6:23) Mercy is God’s sympathetic feeling shown in action (Mk. 5:19; Lk. 10:37; 16:24; Jas. 5:11)

Grace and Mercy: 4 Truths First, God granting grace and mercy does not negate the consequences of sin here and now When David sinned, he was in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness (Psa. 51:1) However, after David sinned, there would still be consequences (2 Sam. 12:10-11)

Grace and Mercy: 4 Truths Second, God’s grace and mercy are not cheap Jesus paid the price on the cross for God’s justice, allowing his grace and mercy to be offered to all (Isa. 53:4-12; 2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 3:24-26) Grace is “in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:4-9)

Grace and Mercy: 4 Truths Third, God’s grace and mercy are unmerited, but not unconditional God’s mercy demands repentance (2 Chron. 30:9; Joel 2:13) God’s mercy demands “the washing of regeneration” (Titus 3:5) Thus, God’s mercy demands one “repent and be baptized” (Acts 2:38)

Grace and Mercy: 4 Truths Fourth, God’s grace and mercy are to be seen his children Christians are to show grace and mercy (Rom. 12:8) To receive mercy (Lk. 18:3; Heb. 4:16) we must be merciful (Mt. 5:7; 6:14-15; Jas. 2:13; 3:17; Jude 21-23)
