6.0 TOPICS IN AMERICAN LIFE E Day –1-7-13

Agenda/ Objectives  SWBAT: ** teams work on assigned cases for Clemency Board Hearings ** start to research and prepare your case HW next round of current events tomorrow

Materials  Find primary sources (newspaper articles and some info from web sites) covering the events and build your case as the prosecution or defense.  Look for bias in the video. What did the producer leave out of the video? This will connect indirectly to media bias.  Research will be challenging on this topic  Use News Bank: Denver Newspapers Present; Search perp + victim name  Compile facts

Materials  The Trevor Jones case will lack info on the crime… research juvenile justice, rehabilitation vs. retribution, or the idea of mitigating circumstances to construct their argument. This will give you something to build their case on, rather than just facts from the particular crime itself.  Get Rolling Stone article for the Yabanez group

Discovery  “Discovery” is a part of any trial and will be part of this trial. The discovery process will be facilitated using a Google Docs “Document” that links all members of the prosecution, defense and the teacher.  All points of evidence will be posted into this document. The posts into the document are not arguments or emotional points …they are simply stated facts (or articles) that the opposing side has the right to know before the trial. Do not post incorrect or misleading information.

 Information not in “discovery” cannot be used unless it was included in the discovery file. Points will be deducted from a prosecution team or defense team that attempts to use facts not in discovery  Reminder: the defense will need to address many of the points in the Power Point if they want to win the case before the clemency board. 
