Digital Library of the Caribbean Creating Single Items with mydLOC and Editing Materials with the Curator Dashboard Phone:

Digital Curation Digital curation involves selection and appraisal by creators and archivists; evolving provision of intellectual access; redundant storage; data transformations; and, for some materials, a commitment to long-term preservation. Digital Curation and Trusted Repositories: Steps Toward Success Digital Curation and Trusted Repositories: Steps Toward Success (2007) With dLOC  Digital Library Collections  Online Exhibits

Creating a Single Item  Log into mydLOC 1. Start a new item 2. Accept Copyright Permissions 3. Enter Metadata 4. Submit Item

What is Good Metadata?  Good metadata is: "constructed, constructive, and actionable."  Good metadata creates intellectual access.  Good metadata is interoperable.  Good metadata draws on and builds upon existing metadata sources.

What is Good Metadata? Good metadata supports imperfect information seeking behavior and works in a web scale world.

Creating Good Metadata  Assistance from specialists (Subject Matter Experts, Curators, Collection Managers, Archivists, Catalogers, Registrars, etc.) to locate or create traditional metadata forms, which can then be imported  Creating metadata using the online self-submittal form

Existing Metadata Sources  Catalog records  Finding aids  Museum object records
