The students came up with the following topic list: –Violence in Communities –Absentee Fathers –Teen Pregnancy –Lack of Local Financial Institutions (issue w/ currency exchanges, lack of local banks and credit unions) –Racial/Ethnic/Community Enslavement – How do our communities and our race continue to keep ourselves down (i.e. how do we live to the stereotypes about us; about physical appearances; stereotypes about ‘being white’ and academic achievement)? –The Economic Recession: how it affects teens, traumatic affects and stress placed on teens; how it forces you to change your financial expectations and demands on your parents; how it affects your ability to get a summer job The majority of the essay should focus on the various ways to positively combat and solve this issue. We will ask students to come up with solutions to be implemented from all levels: –What should/can the President/Washington do? –The State of Illinois/City of Chicago –The Neighborhood Community –The School –The Family –The Individual The contest is optional and will be introduced this week at the After School meeting.
