© Center for Companies That Care, 2004 Overview of What to Expect Hopefully meeting a parent/guardian –We are sending letters home/making phone calls –Have been encouraging students to invite parents (please do the same) Keynote Speaker –We have reached out to: Dawn Turner Trice (Chicago Tribune) Natalie Moore (Chicago Public Radio, WBEZ) Local Aldermen –Do you have any ideas for keynote speakers? that-care.org Student Speakers (winners of Speech Writing contest) –Students are invited to participate in Speech Writing Contest (details in later slides). –Finalists will deliver speeches and be voted on at June 11 th Event. Winner will speak at Companies That Care annual dinner in November.

Student/Mentor Evaluations – A guided discussion with your mentee: - How the year went - What each other’s expectations were and if they were met -- How to improve for next year -- Plans for the summer

© Center for Companies That Care, 2004 Details of Speech Writing Contest Students are asked (optional) to write a 400 word minimum essay on an issue impacting their community. The students came up with the following topic list: –Violence in Communities –Absentee Fathers –Teen Pregnancy –Lack of Local Financial Institutions (issue w/ currency exchanges, lack of local banks and credit unions) –Racial/Ethnic/Community Enslavement – How do our communities and our race continue to keep ourselves down (i.e. how do we live to the stereotypes about us; about physical appearances; stereotypes about ‘being white’ and academic achievement)? –The Economic Recession: how it affects teens, traumatic affects and stress placed on teens; how it forces you to change your financial expectations and demands on your parents; how it affects your ability to get a summer job The majority of the essay should focus on the various ways to positively combat and solve this issue. We will ask students to come up with solutions to be implemented from all levels: –What should/can the President/Washington do? –The State of Illinois/City of Chicago –The Neighborhood Community –The School –The Family –The Individual The contest is optional and will be introduced this week at the After School meeting. Please encourage your student to participate. The more students that participate, the bigger the prizes for the finalists will be.
