OBJECTIVES OF THE WEBINAR To provide practical tips on how to mentor a Rotarian To provide time for questions and interactions of the attendees.

WHY MENTOR? More than one in four new Rotarians with less than two years of service in Rotary leave the club.

MENTORING Mentorship program description Definition of a mentor Goal of a mentor Suggested functions of a mentor

WHAT A MENTOR LOOKS Like The mentor is an experienced and involved Rotarian. The mentor will ideally be somebody who knows the history of the club and RI. The mentor should have time to interact and support the member. (normally a new member is mentored for at least one year). The mentor is a good listener and approachable.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM A NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION? A mentor is a part of the new member orientation program and is designed to increase the likelihood that a new member will get engaged, excited and involved. It promotes a smooth transition into the club. A mentorship program is normally overseen by the membership committee.

MENTORS SHOULD: ENGAGE! EXCITE! INVOLVE!

How to Engage, Excite and Involve Meet Introduce Ask Ensure Be Alert

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Call to encourage them to come to each meeting. Make a point to introduce them to all members.

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Discuss attendance requirements and how to make up meetings (attend other clubs, make up on line)

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Discuss financial obligations of your club (dues, foundation, and meals if applicable)

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Ask what their interests are and ensure very early on to get them involved in club activities that match their interests.

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? All committees in the club should be explained and the new Rotarian can see what ones are interesting. Help member join a committee of his or her interest.

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Engage them early on in a social event (fellowship) or a service project.

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Clarify differences between the Club, District and International activities.

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Encourage them to attend a District Function such as the District Conference.

NEW MEMBER MENTORING SHEET Use this sheet to set goals.

HOW TO BE A MENTOR? Maintain consistent contact with the member to continue to review goals which have been set.

CLOSING THOUGHTS This webinar has been about retaining new members. However, the information can be used for current members who have not been really involved.

CLOSING THOUGHTS This has been a formal mentor program but the ideas can be used by each of us on a weekly basis to encourage all members to be involved.
