Agenda Overview of day Defining Coaching and Consulting Practicing Coaching Skills Jigsaw Dialogue vs. Discussion Reflection LUNCH Individual/Team work time on District Action Plans

Goals Four goals for Teacher Leaders this year: –Personal Growth –Teacher Leadership –Dissemination and Sustainability –Resource Utilization

Goal 2 Teacher Leadership Teacher Leaders will become consciously competent, flexible and confident in 4 aspects of leadership (facilitating, presenting, coaching, and consulting) and apply their learning to building and district level meetings as outlined in their district action plans.

Framework for this year’s Learning Community Forums “Four Hats of Leadership” –From The Adaptive School (pgs.27 and 28) Facilitating Presenting Coaching Consulting –Today…..Coaching and Consulting!

Coach, Consultant?

Coaching and Consulting Answer these questions on your own: –What is coaching? –What is consulting? –What coaching models ( if any) are used in your building/district?

Coaching and Consulting Next, share your ideas of coaching and consulting with the rest of your table Record your ideas of coaching and consulting on the poster paper provided.

Coaching From The Adaptive School, pg. 28 “To coach is to help another take action toward his or her own goals. Simultaneously, the coach supports the colleague in developing his or her expertise in planning, reflecting, problem solving, and decision making.”

Consulting From The Adaptive School, pg. 28 “To consult is to have your expertise be used by others. A consultant can be an information specialist or an advocate for content and or process.”

What are some essential skills of a competent Coach/Consultant? Probing Pausing Paraphrasing Paralanguage

Practice

Pick a partner to work with. Assign roles: one of you is the coach, the other, the one being coached. For the one being coached, choose an issue that you are facing in your District Action Plan. Write this issue down.

Practice: Probing Questions Coach’s role: Ask probing questions of your partner. –To do this, the coach asks an opening question, such as, “What is the issue you are dealing with?” –After hearing the issue, the coach will try asking probing questions to better understand the issue.

Practice: Probing Questions and Pausing Continue the conversation, and Coaches can now try pausing in addition to asking probing questions. –Try this: after asking another probing question and hearing a response, pause and wait for a deeper response.

Practice: Probing Questions, Pausing, and Paraphrasing Coaches add paraphrasing to asking probing questions and pausing. –After asking a probing question and pausing, try paraphrasing what the other person said.

Practice: Probing Questions, Pausing, Paraphrasing, and Paralanguage Now, paralanguage. –Continue the conversation. –See if you can tell where the coach used paralanguage.

Practice Now switch roles and practice using –Probing Questions –Pausing –Paraphrasing –Using Paralanguage

Reflection What were your interactions like as you practiced using more of the four skills? Did this feel natural or forced? Why?

Jigsaw – Dialogue vs. Discussion You will continue to work with your partner From The Adaptive School, both should read pgs One person reads pgs. 54 – middle of 56 Other reads pgs. 56 – middle of 58.

Jigsaw – Dialogue vs. Discussion Follow the Jigsaw Protocol you were given.

yet another Reflection As NCOSP Teacher Leaders, how has your practice of teaching changed? –What knowledge, skills, and attitudes have you gained as a result of being a Teacher Leader? How can you share this with other science teachers in your building/district? –In other words, how can you act as a Coach/Consultant with another teacher?

LUNCH!

Afternoon Session Options: 1.Work with your district on your District Action Plan 2.Define how you could bring the skills used in coaching and consulting to help another teacher in your building/district. 3.Leave immediately to run errands since you have a sub today anyway.
