The first settlements in New Jersey were made by the Dutch along the western bank of the Hudson, with one on the Delaware at Fort Nassau, but these settlements were not important, and the history of the colony properly begins with the occupation of the territory by the English.

W HY T HEY SETTLED THERE -Rich Farmland -Cash Crops for England -Large Plantations were given to New Come-ers from England to encourage people to come also turtles were found in new jersey and were killed for the shell used for toilets. That was when the first toilet was invented.

 Sir George Carteret lead the travelers to New Jersey.

 Lord John Berkeley was king during the time of the settlements of New Jersey.

 Slave’s were expensive because most of them knew how to grow rice and plant crops, and that was rare at the time.

M AIN PRODUCTS PORTED The main products ported were fish, cows, and iron, back then.

W HY DID NO MAJOR PORT DEVELOP IN N EW J ERSEY No major port developed because they did not make the profits they expected and it became a royal colony and because they were a place of ethnic and religious diversity.
