AP Language and Composition December 11, 2012 Mr. Houghteling

 If you were a student in a troubled school, what advice would you give to a new principal in order to change the culture of the school?  Please explain your answer, using specific evidence or examples to support your response.

 Turn in DICTION/SYNTAX responses.  Bellringer~Discussion  Read background of “Meet Joe Clark.”  Watch “Meet Joe Clark.”

 CONTEXT: Freeman plays Principal Joe Clark, who has been assigned to reform Eastside High School, a New Jersey high school struggling with drug problems, gang violence, and low state test scores. Clark is known as “Crazy Joe” for his radical ideology, and he is not trusted by the mayor, but the superintendent of schools argues for Clark to take the reins at Eastside. The text below is his introduction to the staff of Eastside High.

 As you watch the film clip and read the text, pay close attention to the rhetorical strategies and rhetorical appeals used in the speech. While initially viewers may be overwhelmed by the use of pathos, please examine closely Clark’s use of ethos and logos. In addition, analyze the text for the rhetorical devices we have been studying. A word bank of possible devices is given to help you focus your analysis. Use a chart or graphic organizer to help you organize your ideas.

 Read and annotate the “Meet Joe Clark” speech.  Create your own graphic organizer to record your findings about the rhetorical strategies.  Prepare to share with the rest of the class tomorrow.
