Civil War By 20

Introduction The Civil War was the bloodiest war in history. The Confederate was the south. The Union was the north. The Confederate won most of the battle. The reason for this war is that the south wanted slaves and the north didn’t so they started a war.

The Union and Confederate Armies In 1861, neither the North or the South was ready to fight a war. Men on both sides eagerly joined the war to fight or for glory, adventure and money. In the North Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln asked the men to fight for the Union.

Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was a Civil War General. He was the youngest son of General Henry Lee. He was born in Stratford. In 1831 he got married to a girl named Mary. He took part in a Mexican War.

The Battle of Gettysburg During the first two years of war the Confederate won most of the battles. Victories kept the Union from taking over the Confederate capital Richmond, Virginia. The battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the war.

Military Tactics and Technology Civil War armies suffered terrible losses in battles. Both sides tried to attack each other with bigger armies. They tried attacking from trenches. New weapons helped them.

Combat Conditions Civil War Combat Conditions was a horrible nightmare difficult to imagine. Drums beat at a pace of 110 steps per minute. Smoke filled the air. Their was blood every where. Men lay dead on the ground.

Medical Care Hundreds of men died in the war. The surgeons rarely washed their hands. Sometimes they ran out of anesthetics. The tents were gross.

Food and Drink Many died because of some of the food they ate. They ate nasty food sometimes it had bugs in it. They were given a root called chicory to make a coffee like drink. They took fruits from orchards

Conditions on the Home Front Many people were mad about the hardships and unhappiness. In the North many people were angry about the draft. Only wealthy men could escape the draft by paying the Government $300

From Gettysburg to Appomattox The Union won a important battle during the Battle of Gettysburg. The Union captured Vicksburg so the Union had control of the river. In 1864 Lincoln asked Grant to take over the Union.

Conclusion You just learned about their food. Their poor medical treatments. The solders and their lives. The Civil was a horrible war.
