Focus  This is a Persuasive essay, NOT a expository essay. Your job is to persuade, not to explain.  Topic should be related to a career or a passion that you hope to pursue some day.

Organization  Introduction: Hook, Thesis, Subtopics  *Optional to have a paragraph about your interest in subject.  Body Paragraphs 1- 3: 2/3/1 format  Body Paragraphs 4-5: Rebuttal and Counterargument  Conclusion: restate thesis and subtopics with So what?.  If want to rework structure…. -Do a reverse outline. Re-read your essay and outline it looking for the following: -Intro –Claim –Grounds –Warrants -Qualifiers

The Other Side  You MUST represent the other side to demonstrate you are fair and balanced.  When you represent the other side, you MUST include a source to validate the other point of view.

Works Cited VS Bibliography Works Cited: Sources listed in a Works Cited page must be referenced in your essay. Bibliography: Any source you researched, does not necessarily need to be in your essay.

Citations  In-Text Citations: Citations within the essay itself. You should have one – two citations per body paragraph  Works Cited Citations: Entire MLA information listed in the back of your essay with sources alphabetized. ALL sources referenced in your essay must be listed in your Works Cited page.

Citations Continued “Quote” (Citation). “Quote?!” (Citation). If you use a citation in a paragraph multiple times you only need to cite it once. However, if you cite the same source multiple times in different paragraphs, you need to cite it once in each paragraph.

MLA Format Example Hanging Format in Works Cited Page Communication Assn., ERIC Document Reproduction Fuss-Reineck, Marilyn. Sibling Communication in Star Trek: The Next Generation: Conflicts between Brothers. Miami: Speech Sample 1 st Page using MLA Format

Setting Up Sources (Citation Sandwich)  Step 1: Explain the context for using the source.  Step 2: Cite the source.  Step 3: Analyze how it is significant in your thesis.

Direct Quotes in a Citation Sandwich When citing a direct quote from an author, please put the person’s quote in quotation marks (“ “) and set-up who the person is and why there are an expert in the field. Then analyze how this of education, Example: Set – Up: According John Williams, a leading expert from Harvard in the politics of education, school districts that have linked teacher pay to student performance have not seen any significant increases in test scores: Evidence: “ In a 2008 national survey conducted by the US Department of Education, school districts that linked teacher pay to student test performance saw little or no gains in test scores across the district. The survey also indicated in 90% of these districts, teacher morale had hit rock bottom” (Williams, 75). Analysis: Williams supports the argument teacher pay linked to test scores does not positive effect student performance. If anything, the 2008 national survey proves that the only outcome of linking salaries to exam performance causes an increase of stress on teachers and students.

Culminating Project  Please upload your final draft to thumb-drive and save to your “H” drive.  After I have graded your essays, at a date to be determined, Ms. Huston explain how you can upload your essays to e-folio.

Sources and Terms  Make sure to you identify sources. EX: If you are referencing a person/organization as a source, give some context who he/they are: -Expert? –Author? –Someone you Job Shadowed?  Please clarify terms for the reader because the reader is “clueless.”  Anytime you cite new information, give credit where credit is due with a citation.

Adding Voice  Diction: Include some vocabulary words we have covered in class.  Syntax: Mix it up using a long sentence (Periodic/Cumulative), followed by a short one (Hortative/Declarative).  Theme: Weave a Themes that connects your Hook and So What?  The Authoritative “I:” Use “I” to demonstrate your personal authority or interest in the topic.

Good Luck on your papers!! Please include the following in your checklist.  Yes Test  Rubric  Final Draft  3rd Draft w/revisions  2nd Draft w/revisions  Soapbox Speech
