| 2 Universal Lighting Technologies Rapid Start – Magnetic & Electronic Instant Start – Magnetic & Electronic Programmed Start – Electronic Only There are a number of different methods for starting fluorescent lamps. T8 & T5 lamps, may be started by more than one method. The following is a list of the starting methods and which ballast technologies employ these methods. Instant Start and Programmed Start are the methods currently used for most lighting applications. Starting Methods

| 3 Universal Lighting Technologies Rapid Start Rapid Start ballasts provide filament voltage (heating) and lamp voltage simultaneously. When the lamp filaments reach a temperature that is sufficient for ignition with the lamp voltage applied, the lamps ignite. –Glowing of the lamps is visible prior to ignition. –Depending upon the lamp voltage, this may not guarantee that the filament is sufficiently heated, resulting in poor lamp life. –Cathode voltage remains after the lamp has started consuming approximately 2 Watts per lamp. It was believed that electronic rapid start ballasts would provide longer lamp life than instant start ballasts but this has been proved to be incorrect.

| 4 Universal Lighting Technologies Instant Start ballasts operate without heating the filaments. A high voltage is used to ignite the lamps. Instant start operation is more efficient since there is no additional power consumed for heating filaments. –Single pin instant start (slimline) lamps must be instant started. –Some Bi-pin lamps such as the F32T8 and F54T5HO can also be instant started. Programmed Start is growing in popularity but Instant Start is still by far the largest segment. Instant Start

| 5 Universal Lighting Technologies Programmed Start ballasts A.K.A Programmed Rapid Start –Utilize electronic technology to provide optimal starting for lamps to achieve the longest lamp life possible. –Tests have shown lamp life to be extended three times as long as traditional rapid start ballasts in applications where the lamps are frequently cycled on and off. –Programmed Start ballasts can be used in place of rapid start ballasts since they usually wire the same way in the fixture, hence the addition of “Rapid” in the name. | 6 Universal Lighting Technologies Which Electronic Ballast Starting is Best? For the lamp types with a choice of starting methods: Identify the application and expected operating/switching cycle – Expected operating hours between starts – Is the ballast connected to an occupancy sensor? Use Programmed Start to maintain lamp life when: Ballasts are connected to occupancy sensors which will switch frequently If the lighting is going to be switched on and off frequently – Typically less than three hours per start Use Instant start to maximize energy savings when: Ballasts are going to typically remain on for at least three hours between starts Best Starting Method

| 7 Universal Lighting Technologies “True” Parallel Lamp Operation / Ballast Factors What do you mean by “true” parallel lamp operation vs. use of series parallel? –One of the benefits of ULTim8 ballasts are its “True” Parallel Lamp operation. This means that there is independent lamp operation, which simplifies troubleshooting. Lamps stay lit if one lamp fails. This prevents fixtures from going dark and replacing lamps unnecessarily. –Series: In 2L, 3L or 4L applications – if one lamp goes out, all lamps go out. –Parallel: In 2L, 3L or 4L applications – if one lamp goes out, all others stay lit. –Series-Parallel: In 4L applications – if one lamp goes out, 2 of 4 lamps go out. Why is.71 Ballast Factor better than.77 Ballast Factor? – Programmed Start ballasts are available with a.71 ballast factor while instant start ballasts have a.77 ballast factor. – A lower ballast factor maximizes energy efficiency. – Programmed Start ballasts allow lower ballast factor because you can provide the filament heat necessary to maintain lamp life.

| 8 Universal Lighting Technologies T12 vs. T8 Ballasts T12 Ballasts: – Older technology. – Majority of T12 lamp production was phased out in July – Primarily were magnetic ballasts. Magnetic T12 ballast production was phased out in July of – Heavy and large. T8 Ballasts: – Higher efficiency than T12 ballasts. – Electronic design makes them lighter and more compact. – Quieter operation. – Instant on with no warm-up time. – Can lower energy costs. -T12 Lamps will Become Less Available and More Expensive -T12 Ballasts are Inefficient -Retrofitting to T8’s can save up to 40% off your current energy costs. -Most often, the energy savings can pay for the cost of the upgrade. -T12 Magnetic Ballasts Generate Significant Amounts of Heat -Magnetic ballasts lose energy in the form of heat, which adds to air conditioning costs. -Upgrades Improve Lighting Quality -Improves light output and color quality. -Eliminates flickering and buzz that T12’s can cause. -Makes your building look better/feel newer. -Leads to increased productivity. ULTim8® Programmed Start Programmed Start and “True” Parallel lamp technology offer fast start time, and lamps stay lit if one lamp fails. ULTim8® High Lumen and High Bay The high efficiency high ballast factor choice for high lumen T8 applications. Linear Fluorescent Lampholders Combine with ULTim8 ballast orders for a more complete solution. Universal offers high efficiency T8 ballasts for Instant Start and Programmed Start applications. | 10 Universal Lighting Technologies ULTim8® Family: Primary Benefits ULTim8® Instant Start Benefits:  Some of the most efficient ballasts in the industry for maximum energy savings.  Available in high efficiency HE normal (.88), EL low (.77), and HEH high (1.18) ballast factor versions.  Instant Start technology for continuous operation: maximizes energy savings for long cycle operations.  “True” Parallel Lamp operation: Independent lamp operation simplifies troubleshooting. Lamps stay lit if one lamp fails, preventing fixtures from going dark and replacing lamps unnecessarily.  THD < 10%.  Lamp will auto-restrike as a standard feature allowing replacement of lamps without recycling power.  Anti-striation control for better light quality when using energy saving lamps.  Universal input voltage, installer friendly.  Because these ballasts are CEE and NEMA Premium compliant they may qualify for utility incentives.  Backed by 5 year warranty when operated at 75° C max case temperature.

| 11 Universal Lighting Technologies ULTim8® Family: Primary Benefits ULTim8® Programmed Start Benefits:  Same benefits as Instant Start plus...  Available in high efficiency HE normal (.88) and EL low (.71) ballast factor versions. Coming soon is HEH high (1.18) ballast factor.  Programmed start models feature a “soft start” technology making them the perfect choice for high-cycling applications including those involving occupancy sensors.  Programmed Start ballasts are designed to quickly pre-heat lamp cathodes up to their optimum starting temperature and ignite the lamps quickly (within 700 milliseconds).  Filament cut out on HE and HEH models for instant start level efficiency.  The quick ignition results in long lamp life without the typical long delay during turn-on.  Smaller “B” can size (1.0” x 1.5” x 9.5”) for the two lamp version.  RoHS compliant.  Same 5 year warranty as instant start plus 3-year warranty for HEH modules when operated at 90° C case temperature.

| 12 Universal Lighting Technologies ULTim8® Family: Calculate Energy Savings Show your customers a calculation on their energy savings, here’s how... (Number of watts saved x annual hours of operation x energy cost) / (1,000 watts per kilowatt) = Total savings per fixture EXAMPLE: Office (60 watts saved x 4,000 hours x $0.10 per Kwh) / 1,000 = $24 saved per fixture annually $24 per fixture x 500 fixtures = $12,000 annual facility savings ULTim8® ballasts save a typical 6 Watts per ballast versus standard electronic ballasts with F32T8 lamps. When combined with new energy saving lamps, ULTim8® can reduce energy consumption by 60 watts or more when retrofitting a 4-Lamp T12 fixture. | 13 Universal Lighting Technologies Target Segments Commercial / Education / Office / Retail (EL and HE) For example: bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, gymnasiums, classrooms, libraries, offices, luminaire applications, recessed volumetric strips, wraps, fluorescent high bay, etc. Note that we have three success stories for this segment on our website. The energy cost savings are particularly appealing to this segment. Many systems are optimizing energy efficiency by improving lighting output and quality while at the same time reducing maintenance of the school’s lighting systems. With parallel lamp operation, students are never left in the dark. Warehouse / Industrial / Manufacturing (HEH) High bay fixtures. Light up the aisles for the forklift operator when lighting is needed. Keep spaces lit when and where needed.  ULTim8® High Efficiency is perfect for just about every application, especially new construction. –Instant Starts are available in high efficiency HE normal (.88), EL low (.77) and HEH high (1.18) ballast factor versions. –Programmed Starts are available in high efficiency HE normal (.88), and EL low (.71) ballast factor versions. Used for frequently switched applications including occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting. They are a good solution for education, commercial offices and retail.  HEH Ballasts: Used to overdrive lamps. Use these for areas with high light output.
