The Writing Process Prewriting Drafting Revising Editing Publishing

Prewriting (Planning) Why do we prewrite?  To organize information  To jot down ideas What are examples?  Web  List  T-Chart

Prewriting practice…. Situation You are writing about your favorite or ideal vacation spot. (What type of prewriting is best for Transactive (nonfiction) writing?) Your turn…

Prewriting practice…. Situation You are writing a short story in which the main character is a surfer. The following picture is a scene you visualize when you are thinking of your story. What type of prewriting is best for fictional writing? Your turn…

Drafting How do we get from our prewriting to drafting? ELABORATE = give details and description. Add on to your initial (beginning) ideas Your turn…Choose your nonfiction or fiction planning and develop a well-written paragraph so that the reader can visualize it.

Revising Step outside the box! Read your piece with NEW EYES! This means to read it like it’s brand new and evaluate and think about whether all of your information fits. Some might need to be deleted, more might need to be added, or information might need to be rearranged in your piece. Your turn…re-read your paragraph. Add, remove, or move details. Have a partner do the same. Saying “it’s good” is not acceptable.

Editing Is it correct?  Spelling  Capitalization  Punctuation  Grammar Your turn…

Publishing What are some ways we publish?  Share it with others (friends, teachers, parents)  Create a brochure  Present a powerpoint  Hang up a flyer  Etc…
