Mr. Lusk’s Fifth- Grade Class Welcome, students!

Welcome to Fifth Grade!  I will introduce you to Fifth grade and to our classroom.  If you have any questions during my presentation, please raise your hand and wait to be called on. This will be a rule through out the year.

All About Me My experience  I’ve been teaching for 12 years.  I have taught fifth and sixth grades  I have 3 college degrees Interests  Sports – Softball and Golf  Reading – Current Events

My Goals  To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress to sixth grade.  To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.  To help you make new friends and discover new interests.

Expectations  1. We stop, look, and listen when anyone is speaking in the classroom.  2. We raise our hand to speak or ask questions.  3. We RESPECT others and our property.  4. We work without distracting others.  5. We always do our BEST.  6. We complete all work in the time given.  7. We use appropriate voices in the classroom.  Always remember The Golden Rule : Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

Class Subjects  The subjects we cover during fifth grade are:  Reading  Language Arts  Math  Science  Social studies  Music, Media, Art, and Phy. Ed.

Teachers in the Classroom  Mrs. Oaches If you have any questions feel free to talk to an teacher in the room. We are here to help you be successful!!!

Reading  We will be reading from our Houghton Mifflin book.  We will also read  Accelerate Reader books during the year.  We will use our Practice book for grading your comprehension.

English/Writing  We will be using 4 Square Writing.  We will also do Daily Language Practice.  We will write in cursive at least once a week.  We will use our Practice book for grading your English skills.

Spelling  Pre Test on Tuesday  Post Test Friday  Spelling Contract given on Monday and due Friday  We will use our Practice book for grading your spelling skills.

Math  We will be using Math Expressions as our text book

Science  We will be using Harcourt books this year.  We will use Foss Kits late in the year.  Ms. Preheim teaches Science.

Social Studies  We will be using Scott Foresman and Weekly Geography. Quarterly projects will be assigned.

Music, Art, Media, P.E.  Music – Mrs. Grabow  Art – Mrs. Goodman  Media – Mrs. Johnson  P.E. – Mr. Sizer and Ms. Sanborg.

Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.

Class Rules  Listen when others are talking.  Follow directions.  Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.  Work quietly and do not disturb others.  Show respect for school and personal property.  Work and play in a safe manner.

Homework  I will assign about 45 minutes to an hour of homework every night. This includes Accelerated Reader.  Your homework packet is due on Friday morning.  If you need extra time to work on your homework, you can go to homework help on Monday and Wednesdays.

Homework Policy  1 late – name in the late book and board – complete assignment by next day  2 lates –name in the late book complete assignment by next day – miss recess and get a G.R.R.I.P. slip  Any more than 2 you get a G.R.R.I.P. slip for every late assignment

Tardiness  School starts at 7:55 A.M.  If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the second bell rings, please check in at the planning room before coming to class.

Field Trips  We have lots of fun field trips planned for this year!  We will attend  History Fest  Minnesota Zoo  Le Sueur Community Center – Reward Day

Procedures  Fire Drill – line up quietly at the door – Mr. Lusk will lead and we will designate someone to be last in line. We will then proceed to the tar playground area. No talking or running!!!

Procedures  Dr. Lock - if your in the hallway you will go to the nearest room. We will not leave the room during a Dr. Lock.

Procedures  Code Red - if your in the hallway you will go to the nearest room. We will not leave the room during a Code Red. The door will be locked and we will sit silently by the Green counter.
